Henry Cavill has become something of an idol for many gamers. In a TV show, the actor had to explain his hobby – and point out that it has nothing to do with the MMORPG World of Warcraft, which he also plays.
Who is Henry Cavill? The British actor is best known for his roles as Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix series “The Witcher” (2019) and as Superman, for instance in “Man of Steel” (2013).
In the gaming bubble, Cavill is known for being passionately involved in many nerdy topics. For many gamers, he is particularly likeable, as he shares some hobbies with them.
In 2020, he built his own gaming PC with a high-end graphics card. The video of the assembly quickly garnered over a million views and hundreds of thousands of likes.
Now Cavill sat alongside other actors on the Graham Norton Show. This is a comedy chat show on the British channel BBC One. There, Cavill explained one of his hobbies: Warhammer.
“Sounds ridiculous, but it’s fun!”
This is what Cavill says: The host Graham Norton asks Cavill about his hobby. He paints little figures and asks: “War… World of Warcraft, or?”
Cavill corrects him and explains that the figures are from Warhammer, not the famous MMORPG from Blizzard. When asked if he paints them by hand or if they are available ready-made, Cavill replies:
“You have to paint them. It depends on how much work you put into it. There’s the painting side of the hobby and the playing side. […] Then you assemble them into armies and fight against the armies of others. It’s fun. It sounds ridiculous, but it’s fun!”
How the others present react: The host himself pokes a little fun at the statement and says: “Oh, yes, toys, great fun.” It seems he cannot really relate to the hobby.
Next to Cavill is also Tom Holland, the new actor of Spider-Man from “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017). He seems to be quite taken with Warhammer. He thinks it sounds “fantastic.”
Warhammer is not Warcraft
What is Warhammer actually? The famous game from Games Workshop is originally a tabletop game. You assemble plastic figures, paint them (or not) and fight against other players.
Basically, it is a tactical, turn-based strategy game without a computer, but analog. Depending on the rules, the armies are limited in size and formation. Various factions are available for selection.
Warhammer is divided into a fantasy setting and the futuristic 40K setting, which takes place in the distant future. Cavill himself is a fan of Warhammer 40K, like many other players around the world.
What is World of Warcraft then? The fantasy world from Blizzard is based on the old strategy game series “Warcraft.” Here, roughly speaking, humans fight against orcs, each with allied races like dwarves, elves, trolls, and taurens.
World of Warcraft is one of the largest and best-known MMORPGs and has been on the market since 2004. The game gets continuously expanded. The latest expansion is Shadowlands.
Warhammer and Warcraft are quite similar, which has led to confusion in the past – mainly because of their names. Fans of both franchises usually take this little “war” with humor.
Cavill is also not averse to World of Warcraft. Or at least he used to play the MMORPG extensively. He became so immersed in the world that he almost missed out on one of his most important roles:
