Enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows 11
This is what the feature brings: Normally, your graphics card (GPU) takes on all graphics-intensive tasks on your computer. The processor (CPU) handles more of the task distribution and data collection, passing commands to the GPU.
With the hardware-accelerated feature, the graphics card and video memory take on some tasks of the processor. This way, the system runs faster and smoother. The processor is less burdened, the graphics card can handle tasks directly, and the processor can pass on more commands. This primarily reduces latency.
Here’s how to enable the feature: The feature is generally disabled in Windows 11. You can activate the feature by following these steps:
- First, click on the Windows icon on the taskbar and select Settings (a gear icon).
- Then navigate to the “Display” menu item.
- Here, select the sub-item “Graphics settings”.
- In this menu, you have preset graphics settings. You need to change these now. Click on the graphics settings and toggle the switch to enable.
- Here you can then enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling.
- Finally, restart your system to apply the settings.
If you do not see improved performance, you can turn off “Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling” the same way.
Feature Requires Relatively Recent Hardware
I can’t enable the feature: The feature does not appear in your settings if your graphics card and graphics driver do not support the feature. In the best case, you need to update your graphics card driver to the latest version.
It is recommended to have at least an Nvidia GTX 1000 or newer or an AMD RX 5600 or newer. You don’t need a GeForce RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 6700 XT if you want to try the feature.
What do you think about it? Are you already using Windows 11 or would you rather wait? Microsoft has also added some features to Windows 11 that aim to appeal to gamers. The most well-known feature is certainly Auto HDR, which enhances lighting. You can read more about the new features here:
