When is the release? The release of Windows 11 will take place on October 5, 2021. Microsoft has now announced this in its official blog (via blog.windows.com). This means that in about a month, you can already install Windows 11 on your computer.
Microsoft has emphasized multiple times that the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is free. So you will not pay any money for an upgrade if you are already using the current Windows version.
When can I install Windows 11? The free upgrade to Windows 11 will be available starting October 5. Microsoft will distribute the update in waves.
This means for you: New devices that are eligible for the upgrade will receive it first. In the weeks and months after October 5, Windows 11 will then be available for additional devices.
If you are currently using Windows 10, you will receive a notification from “Windows Update” as soon as you can perform the upgrade. Alternatively, go through the settings and check for updates in “Windows Update”.

Do I really need Windows 11? Official support for Windows 10 runs until October 14, 2025. In principle, you can still use Windows 10 afterwards, but you will no longer receive security and feature updates.
Especially if you spend a lot of time online or gaming, this poses a security risk for you. However, you can continue to use Windows 10 until then. Windows 10 is also expected to continue to receive major feature updates.
