Having a fixed “Main” can lead to a ban in Overwatch . At least that is currently being discussed.
Blizzard’s hero shooter Overwatch is not only famous for its global success but also notorious for its problems with the toxic community. Players repeatedly cross the line and are often punished with “Reports” from their teammates. These, when repeated, can lead to an account suspension.
But what exactly can lead to an account suspension? Mean language in chat, inactivity – but also playing a certain character?
Actually, that shouldn’t be the case, as Blizzard confirmed on Twitter a few months ago.
After all, there are some well-known streamers who play “only Bastion” or “only Hanzo”, and as long as they put in effort and take it seriously, that should never be a problem.
In the last few days, there have been some wild discussions on Reddit, because Blizzard apparently banned two players who played only Torbjörn all day. Regardless of whether this led to a good team composition or whether their teammates complained.
What came out late: Both players refused to participate in matches after other teammates “took away” their Torbjörn. As a result, they received a lot of reports from their teammates and appropriate account penalties.
Blizzard Causes Confusion
The topic was heatedly discussed in the official forum. Since it was assumed that the players were banned for their “only Torbjörn” attitude, a statement from Blizzard was requested. This only further escalated the situation.
In the forum, the Community Manager Josh Engen sounds as if one must always comply with the wishes of the team. After all, one of Blizzard’s mantras is “Play nice; Play fair”. Engen said:
“Players often focus on the ‘Play fair’ part, but forget the ‘Play nice’. Sometimes that means switching heroes when the team wants it and sometimes it means adapting to your own team.”
Thus, Blizzard’s rule does not seem so clear after all. A final statement is still pending, but the community is dissatisfied with this form of statement. It is said to be vague and nobody now knows exactly what is allowed.
“It’s best to only play the 6 heroes that currently make up the current meta,” it is said with some sarcasm between the lines.
What do you think of this attitude? Should players be punished for always playing a certain character? Or should everyone always be allowed to play what they want?
