In Fortnite, “The End” has sucked up the entire game and made it unplayable. Even the PvE part of Fortnite, “Save the World”, is not accessible – is a major change coming? After all, the early access title “Save the World” was supposed to be free in 2018 and celebrate its release as a Free2Play title.
This happened in the event: In Fortnite Battle Royale, Season X ended with a bang. The big live event on Sunday evening sucked the entire map and all players into a black hole – since then, you only land on a black screen in Fortnite.
On this screen, you can activate a fun mini-game, but Fortnite in its normal form is currently unplayable. And the “End” doesn’t seem to only refer to the game.
What happens to “Save the World”?
So here is the current status: The end has not only sucked away the Battle Royale mode in Fortnite but also “Save the World”. The PvE mode was actually the original Fortnite back in summer 2017, but it was overtaken in popularity by Battle Royale.
Originally, Save the World was supposed to be finished in 2018 and released for free for everyone. However, to this day, the Save the World mode remains paid and is still stuck in early access.
The “End” of Fortnite has also reached the official social media channels and the Epic website. And apparently, it does not stop at the Fortnite Store: The leaker “FireMonkey” has found out that Epic has disabled the purchase option for several items.
This affects V-Bucks, but also the Standard Edition, the Deluxe Edition, and the upgrade to the Deluxe Edition.
“Save the World” is currently not available for purchase in the store. This could be an indication that it will become Free2Play in the future.
Only a few changes in 2019
Will Save the World be free? The fact is: The Free2Play launch of “Save the World” has been planned for a long time. Originally, the re-release was supposed to take place in 2018. But then Epic decided, “after careful consideration”, to rethink that decision.
Although many new features were already ready, they wanted to bring even more before the mode became free.
The community largely agreed with that move at the time. They felt that there was still a lot to improve in the mode.
After the announcement, two major changes occurred:
- a rework of the game and the interface to a comic look in November 2018
- transparent loot boxes, the so-called “X-ray Llamas” in January 2019

Is Epic closing the chapter on “Save the World” now?
Here’s what’s behind it: There hasn’t been much happening in Fortnite: Save the World in 2019. The mode has completely disappeared from public perception. There’s really no reason for Epic to say now: “Okay, it’s release-ready. We are making it Free2Play now.”
However, it’s possible that Fortnite has decided that “Save the World” is now ready for release because they want to close this chapter.
It has been very quiet around “Save the World” for 9 months, and revenues are likely not as high anymore – so they might as well make it Free2Play and close an open issue that has been lingering for a long time and that reflects poorly on Epic.
The end event has definitely raised a lot of questions. How could it continue with Fortnite?
