For many fans of MMORPGs, addons and mods are simply part of the experience. They allow you to change the UI or add assistance for quests. But will the upcoming MMO New World from Amazon support such addons?
Will New World support addons? This is still unclear. So far, it has not been possible to install your own addons or mods during the Alpha and Beta. There is also currently no official interface through which things like a character’s condition or position in the world can be queried.
However, addons or mods have not been completely ruled out by Amazon so far.
Additionally, there is always the option to work with so-called overlays. These do not access the game files but allow an additional layer of information to be placed over the displayed game content. Such overlays are practically impossible to prohibit as long as players are in windowed mode.
Addons are useful in various areas of the game
What are addons and mods interesting for? Third-party addons – meaning not from the game’s developers themselves – are often used to change the UI of the game. This is because not all MMORPGs offer such an option, or it does not go far enough for players in some titles.
In addition to the adjustments to the UI, addons also have several other functions, including:
- Tips and assistance with quests
- Displaying resources or farming routes on the map
- A damage meter
- Supporting hints when bosses use particularly strong abilities
They can therefore be useful in almost every area of an MMORPG.

Which MMORPGs utilize addons and which do not? Addons are especially popular in games like WoW, ESO, and Blade & Soul. MeinMMO author Melli even uses 195 addons to configure ESO according to her wishes.
However, there are also MMOs that refrain from using such tools, such as Guild Wars 2 or Black Desert.
What direction New World will take will probably be revealed at release. However, we already know some content that the new MMO is supposed to receive after the release:
