Nvidia has introduced the GeForce RTX 4080 and RTX 4090, but many gamers are complaining about the high price. Nvidia has now stated that the graphics cards will not become cheaper.
Over the last 2 years, graphics cards have been really expensive, and many users have referred to them as a “luxury item” when it comes to good PC hardware.
Meanwhile, prices are dropping again, and processors and graphics cards are available at somewhat reasonable prices. Many users hoped for a good deal on a GeForce RTX 4080 or RTX 4090. However, that seems unlikely, as Nvidia’s CEO has now explained.
RTX 4080 costs at least 1,099 Euros – Nvidia says: The prices will stay as they are
What was said exactly? On the occasion of the big introduction of the RTX 4000, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang spoke with the people. He was also asked why the graphics cards are so expensive and if they would become cheaper again. However, he explained that cheap chips belong to the past (via digitaltrends.com):
Moore’s Law is dead. […] A 12-inch wafer is much more expensive today. The idea that prices for chips will drop belongs to the past.
Compared to the performance of Nvidia’s $899 GPU or $1,599 GPU from a year ago, two years ago, at the same price point, the performance with Ada Lovelace [RTX 4000] is monumentally better. Undeniably better.

This statement is not entirely new, as Nvidia had already explained about a year ago that the high prices for graphics cards would likely stay and that there are various reasons for this:
What does this mean? “Moore’s Law” states that there is a connection between performance and price: According to “Moore’s Law,” performance should double at half the price. In the long term, you get more performance for less money.
Why were gamers hoping for falling prices at all? Due to the corona pandemic and scarce resources, computer components like graphics cards or processors have been very expensive. At times, it was impossible to buy a graphics card at reasonable prices. Because miners and scalpers were fighting for the few good offers, which later landed on eBay for thousands of Euros.
With the introduction of the RTX 4000 at a price point of at least 1,099 Euros, the hopes of many gamers who were hoping for better prices are dashed. And after the statements from Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, we should brace ourselves for these prices to remain.
