Russians and citizens of the former Soviet Union who want to enjoy a cozy round of WildStar or Guild Wars 2 are left in the lurch. What are the reasons?
“No Russians allowed” is currently figuratively written on the service homepage of WildStar and Guild Wars 2, as Russia, along with many former Soviet countries, is on the list of blocked nations. This means that no one trying to log in to Guild Wars 2 or WildStar from these countries will gain access.
What is going on?
According to the website MassivelyOP, the list of blocked nations was initially divided into two parts. One part included countries like North Korea, Iran, or Syria. These nations were blocked due to sanctions by the U.S. government. Russia and its former satellite states, on the other hand, were excluded for unspecified reasons (legal and security reasons).
However, this division has since disappeared, and there is now only one list that simply considers all previously mentioned states as blocked without providing any reasons. Thus, Russia, Belarus, and Georgia are on the same ban list as North Korea and Syria! According to MassivelyOP, the ban on Ukraine was a mistake, but the country remains on the list of blocked states.
We have inquired with NCSoft about this situation and expect a response during the day. Once we have an official statement from the publisher, we will update this report. Whether other games from the U.S. are planning similar actions against Russia and others is not yet known to us. We will report on this as soon as we know more.
