This didn’t last long. Story writer Drew Karpyshyn is leaving BioWare and the Anthem team after less than two years.
When Drew Karpyshyn returned to BioWare in 2016, fans were delighted. After all, Karpyshyn is considered one of the brilliant minds behind many of the cool stories that we got to experience in the first parts of the “Mass Effect” series. When “Anthem” was later announced, fans could also be reassured. Anthem would surely be more than a “soulless MMO shooter” and would feature an exciting story.
This trust is now wavering, as Drew Karpyshyn has announced that he is leaving BioWare again. After less than 2 years, his last day at BioWare was on March 2, 2018. Although he does not provide explicit reasons, he implies in his farewell post on his blog that BioWare simply took too much time, leaving all his other projects behind. In addition to his work on video games, he has also published several sci-fi novels.
However, Karpyshyn is not completely withdrawing from the game industry. He will work at Fogbank Entertainment and FoxNext Games in the future, although he is not yet allowed to reveal anything about the projects there.
Lastly, he points out that there would be “no dirty laundry” – so no disputes or anything that would have led him to stop at BioWare. He will also not talk about Anthem just because he no longer works at BioWare – fans will have to wait for official announcements and the release of the game.
Whether this means that the story writing for Anthem is already finished cannot be said at this time. We can only follow Karpyshyn’s advice: wait and drink tea.
