The user Mausermaus describes in this experience report how he came to Destiny and what fascinates him about the game.
For many players, the journey through the Destiny universe began in 2014 with Destiny 1 – also for the user Mausermaus. Since then, he has been a proud Guardian, and Destiny has become an inseparable part of his life. And although the title is now several years old and has a successor in the form of Destiny 2, Destiny 1 still fascinates numerous fans. This has prompted Mausermaus to write a love letter to Destiny.
How I came to Destiny
Destiny. I didn’t know what Destiny is or what it was. Sure, it was a shooter according to the information I had. I read several reviews on a major online retailer. I understood nothing of what people were talking about there. No matter.
It was my brother-in-law who told me: “Get Destiny and you won’t want to play anything else”.
I started this game, hoping it would truly be what it claimed to be. A milestone in video game history. I started the demo version because, at the end of 2014, you could play for free up to light level 7.
My first steps
The birth of the Guardian, in my case the Guardianess, was more than just a bit of PlayStation gaming. It was an incredible feeling. From that moment on, I felt completely at home, even though I didn’t have a single kill under my belt.
I ran into this Cosmodrome and took out the first Fallen. Unbelievable! This gameplay! I could have cried because it impressed me so much. I was so blown away that I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face.
The soundtrack took me to the 7th heaven. These fights, packed with epic sound, were a force to be reckoned with. Bam – reached levels 3, 4, 5. You wanted more of this gaming experience.
Shooting down enemy health bars was something entirely new to me, but at the same time, it was something in which I found my balance. No matter how stressful a day was, no matter what troubled me – as soon as I played Destiny, I forgot all my worries and was completely able to relax. Wow, I had never felt like that before.
This first Saturday night with Destiny was a night that has remained in my memory to this day. A Saturday night when I reached light level 7 in the demo version. Great. What now?! Big red market: 45 euros (not available until Monday). PSN Store: 70 euros. Whatever. I had to continue, and I purchased the first Destiny for 70 euros on PSN.
I kept playing and couldn’t stop until I finally crashed into my bed like a young god. Damn, I was a family man. I couldn’t play Destiny all day Sunday. Man, that was tough.
So the journey of my Guardian continued
Monday evening it continued. My first encounter with a Guardian during a patrol. Oh my God, what was that? I couldn’t believe it. I had been used to playing Super Mario on NES, and now I was running into another person (Guardian) in an online world?! That was a moment when I had to call my wife to show her.
I knew she didn’t care at all. But I just wanted to share this moment with someone. It was fascinating and breathtaking for me to embark on a mission with this Guardian. My brother-in-law turned out to be right from that moment on. I simply didn’t want to play anything else. I knew I was a Guardian.
After many hours and many strikes, I finally reached light level 20. So, I was told that the game really begins. And so it was. The wonderful purple gear suddenly came into play. Booaahh. I felt even more powerful and better. My satisfaction was boundless. I was a powerful Guardian ready to face the first raid, the Vault of Glass.
What I am particularly proud of
Raid was a foreign word for me. Blasting everything away with 6 Guardians? Sure, it would be really cool. I had found 5 Guardians with light level 26 to knock on the Vault of Glass. What awaited me there was intergalactically gigantic and absolutely unbeatable.
I felt at home in this world. It pulled me into a vortex. Those jumps deep into the abyss were a feeling that was coupled with endless tension and above all endless freedom. The Templar, the cleansing – what was all that? Oracles? No idea! I thought I just had to clear a bunch of enemies.
I have to say, I was completely overwhelmed and absolutely stressed. I couldn’t control the controller anymore and felt the pressure from the other 5 Guardians that was weighing on me. I was simply totally overwhelmed and at the same time astounded because I realized how bad I actually was. But since I am an ambitious person by nature, I wanted to get a grip on it.
I wanted to reach light level 32 through the raid. Those Ascendant Shards. I needed them for every single step in light level. Atheon, I also defeated you. I didn’t understand anything, but I defeated you. My group of 5 told me about the mechanics through the headset. Didn’t get it at all and yet defeated it. I finished the Vault of Glass with a lot of sweat.
In that moment I was actually a Destiny sweat. I was proud of this first raid experience. To this day, I enjoy Destiny to the fullest and pray that this game lasts for many years to come. I am so grateful for the people who can give me this gaming experience. And even in tough times, I will always stand by Destiny.
