Ah yes, the Christmas season. Calm, reflective, somewhat peaceful. These adjectives are often associated with the time around the holiday. Do you know what does not fit these words at all? The Weekend League in FIFA 21.
The Weekend League is fundamentally more akin to “last-minute gift shopping” on the Christmas stress scale than to “reflective mood on Advent morning”.
After all, every single point counts on the weekend if you want to have good rewards. That requires maximum concentration. And if I really try hard, I can at least consistently get to 14 wins. But in December? Concentration tends to go down the drain. And to be honest: I’m to blame.

What is different at Christmas? Normally, I try to play as focused as possible in the Weekend League. Like many players, I rely on music that is supposed to help achieve as many goals as possible while conceding as few as possible.
If you take a look around on Spotify, you’ll find plenty of playlists from players with nice names like “FIFA 21 WL sweating”, “FIFA 21 Weekend League Motivation” or simply the FIFA 21 soundtrack. They contain songs that either push you forward when you want to score or provide a good playing rhythm with subtle beats.
But during Christmas time, I somehow get into Christmas mode. Instead of “WL sweating”, I just feel a bit of Christmas spirit on the weekend. Accordingly, I also like to throw a Christmas playlist on the system. And every year I think: Ah, Christmas music is nice for a round of FIFA. It keeps the mood up, right? If you concede a goal, you can at least laugh it off with jingle bells and cheerful chimes. Right? Wrong.
Because, like every year, I was caught again this time. The jingling in the Christmas songs certainly creates a cheerful atmosphere, but it also distracts. Not to mention humming along to “Driving Home for Christmas” or “Last Christmas” while trying to dribble past an opponent. I guarantee you: You just can’t pull off consistent step-overs when you’re actually stuck in a Christmas song.
In the past few weeks, it has unfortunately happened more often that I happily looked forward to the chorus of “Thank God it’s Christmas”, only to concede an absolutely nasty and unexpected counter goal. To be honest: Christmas music and FIFA 21 just don’t go together as well as I would like. The songs ruin the game, and the game ruins the songs.
In the end, only one person is really in a good mood: My opponent. He gets a few nice goals served on a silver platter, as well as WL points and maybe even better Weekend League rewards. But who cares – I just love Christmas music too much! After all, it’s Christmas, and I’ve heard that it’s better to give than to receive. So I can spread a few gifts!
