A Senior Game Producer from World of Warcraft talks about the fascination of the MMORPG. He casually explains why new MMORPGs struggle to compete against WoW.
At Gamescom 2018, we had the opportunity for an interview with a Senior Game Producer from WoW, Michael Bybee.
The community is a strength of WoW
We asked Michael Bybee why even large publishers like Riot fear comparison with World of Warcraft and might even forgo a new MMORPG. After all, Riot Games believes, it is not a good idea to want to measure up to WoW.
The players are the strength of WoW: Bybee said in the interview that WoW is so successful because players can be found at any time.
“That is one of the great strengths of World of Warcraft. Maybe I can’t play it for a long time and explain everything to you, but I have friends who will teach you [the game]. That makes the game such a rich, profound experience,” Bybee said.
WoW has 14 years of advantage over new MMORPGs
The magic of World of Warcraft: WoW has been around for 14 years and has consistently delivered new content since its release. According to Bybee, the challenge for every MMORPG is to provide enough content to stay alive.
Bybee mentions Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street from Riot Games in his response, who could bring the required experience for a LoL MMO. Michael Bybee: “He has worked on World of Warcraft, he knows exactly what the game is about.”
Bybee further states: “One of the big challenges for any MMO is: We have 14 years of game content, history, and people who have played the game, built a bond.” However, he also emphasizes that he would be happy about similar games from other developers:
“I think it would be great if other companies pursued something like that. I personally would be thrilled to play such games. I love MMOs. But I think World of Warcraft has pretty great magic when it comes to finding people to play with.”
Bybee may have casually explained why the “WoW-killers” of the last 14 years were doomed to fail.
