This week, the new Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” launched in America, which cannot yet be seen in Germany. All the hype around it makes me want to play the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, where I can play as a Mandalorian myself.
This is what the series is about: The focus of the new live-action series set in the Star Wars universe is a Mandalorian bounty hunter who takes on contracts. The series is set 9 years after the movie “Return of the Jedi”, but far removed from the influences of the New Republic.
The series is currently only available on Disney+, which will be unlocked in Germany on March 31, 2020.
Why does the series make me want to play SWTOR? Basically, I am a big fan of the franchise and the stories surrounding Star Wars. A new series generates attention and rekindles my desire to engage intensively with Star Wars.
That’s why I have now started playing a bounty hunter in SWTOR for the first time, and my goal is to turn him into a Mandalorian, just like in the series. Whether I will behave just like him will depend on the course of “The Mandalorian”.
Becoming a Mandalorian yourself, even if you can’t watch them
What are Mandalorians? Mandalorians are not a classic race but rather a clan-based people. They define themselves by a common identity, ideology, or language. Originally, they were a large group and even wanted to take on the Republic.
During the time of The Old Republic, however, they are almost completely scattered due to the Mandalorian Wars. They mostly work alone or in small groups as bounty hunters and hardly adhere to the old code, just like in SWTOR.
How does one become a Mandalorian in SWTOR? To join the clan, you need to create a bounty hunter. For this, you must start on the side of the Empire.
Now play your class quests until Chapter “The Great Hunt”. Once you have completed the quests, you will be told that you are a Mandalorian in spirit, whether you like it or not. Then you can either join the group or decline.
This only has a limited impact on the story and progress, usually only in individual dialogues. However, it feels odd in the dialogue to refuse the invitation and leave with an insult.
What other Mandalorian content is there? Besides the option to join the group, there are also various armors in the style of the Mandalorians.
Additionally, there are two Mandalorian companions, Torian Cadera for bounty hunters and Akaavi Spar for smugglers.
SWTOR offers plenty of new content
What’s currently happening in SWTOR? Even if you have no interest in Mandalorians and the new series, The Old Republic might be interesting for you.
In late October, the new expansion Onslaught was released, which is very popular among players. In it, you can expect:
- New story chapters
- Two new planets
- A new Flashpoint
- A new max level (75)
If you are generally just a free-to-play player or have never played SWTOR before, there were some adjustments made for you. For instance, in summer, the restrictions for free-to-play players were relaxed and two expansions have been given away.
