Sony officially presented the new PS VR 2 at CES 2022 and explained that they want to significantly surpass the previous model. In a new statement, they have now explained what you can play with it. And the answer is: Not all VR games of the PlayStation.
PlayStation VR (short: PS VR) is a virtual reality headset that Sony developed for the PS4. Players who wear the headset can immerse themselves more in the game world. A virtual space is created in the brain that our eyes perceive as realistic. Certain VR games can only be played on the PlayStation with such a headset.
Now Sony has explained what you can play with the new headset. And this may not please all players.
In the meantime, Sony has also presented the first games for PS VR2:
PSVR2 is not backwards compatible with the PS4
What did Sony say? Sony explained in a podcast that PS VR2 is not backwards compatible with the PS5. It is stated in the latest episode of the PlayStation Podcast (via wccftech.com)
PSVR games are not compatible with PS VR2 because PS VR2 was designed to offer a true next-generation VR experience. PS VR2 features much more advanced capabilities such as a completely new controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, as well as inside-out tracking, eye tracking, 3D audio, and of course HDR. This means that developing games for PS VR2 requires a completely different approach than for the original PSVR.
What does this mean for me? If you want to buy the new equipment for PS VR2, you can only play the new PS5 games with it. You cannot buy PS VR2 and catch up on the old generation. If you want to catch up on the old PS4 games, you will inevitably also need to buy the old headset. And here, motion controllers for the hands are almost sold out everywhere.
So, in the future, you cannot benefit from better battery life or the new ergonomics that Sony promises with the new headset in older titles.
VR is becoming increasingly interesting for players
VR could play a significant role in the future and is becoming increasingly interesting for many players. A good example of this is the VR MMORPG Zenith: The Last City. This game was quickly overwhelmed after its release because everyone wanted to try the VR technology. The game has received several major updates since then, and the servers are running steadily again. Nevertheless, the developers were surprised by the rush.
The MMORPG Lost Ark also presented a VR mode. Although this was meant to be a friendly joke, MeinMMO author Mark Sellner is sure that such a mode is definitely needed for the MMORPG:
Lost Ark shows new VR mode and it’s exactly what the MMORPG needs
