Anyone who still uses Windows 10 in their daily life and has not yet switched to Windows 11 should change the following settings to gain more performance. MeinMMO explains which settings you should make and how to handle it most easily.
With Windows 11 already out, it is the successor to Windows 10, and official support for Windows 10 will end in late 2025. If you still want to stick to Windows 10, you should keep the following tricks in mind to make your system better and more secure.
What you need to consider for the end of support for Windows 10 can be read in the following article on MeinMMO:
Blocking the Upload of Updates
In Windows 10, the option for updates to be downloaded from your computer by other devices on the network or the internet is hidden. If you are not interested in this or have privacy concerns about sharing your updates with other users, you can and should disable this feature:
- Open “Settings”, either through the menu or with Windows key + I.
- Click on “Update & Security”.
- Go to the menu item “Delivery Optimization”.
- Turn off the option “Allow downloads from other PCs”.
Disable Annoying Notifications
Windows 10 has notifications that you can receive for any action. However, this can quickly become overwhelming if you have many different programs installed or because Windows can simply be very chatty.
We therefore recommend that you select the services or applications in the options from which you really want to receive a notification. You should turn off all others. To do this, you need to follow these steps:
- Open “Settings” and then switch to “System”.
Select “Notifications & Actions” here. - Here you will see a complete list of the programs that can send you a notification. Deactivate those that you no longer want to receive.
Stop Receiving Personalized Ads
If you use Windows or are online, Windows saves your entire behavior in a unique advertising ID. All ads and advertising you receive are personalized for you and linked to the advertising ID.
The problem, however, is that this digital footprint does not just stay on Microsoft’s servers but also ends up in the hands of other companies.
If you do not want this and want more control over your own data, then change the following settings:
- Go to “Settings” and then to “Privacy”.
- Click on “General”
- Deactivate the first option for the advertising ID to reset it.
Turn Off Constant Synchronization in Windows 10
Windows 10 continuously synchronizes settings, passwords, or the history of everything you are currently doing on your computer. Therefore, it might be advisable to delete them completely.
- Open “Settings” in Windows and then go to “Account”.
- Switch to the menu item “Sync your settings”.
- Remove the permissions for the processes you do not want to synchronize.
Optional: Stop Background Applications
Background applications are constantly running, even if they are not being used in a main window. This means that CPU, RAM, or GPU resources are being used by the programs. Therefore, it may be important to turn off several processes and free up resources.
However, keep in mind: If you turn off all background applications, then in the most annoying case, some functions of your printer or other software may no longer work. Alternatively, simply turn off the applications that you definitely do not need:
- Go to “Settings” and then to “Privacy”.
- Here go to the section “Background Apps.” It is quite far down.
- Now either disable the function completely with the first option or turn off any software you do not need.
