On the Xbox Series X, S, and also on the old Xbox One, you can use various ways to top up your balance. Either you use your bank card or you use a credit voucher from the supermarket. Alternatively, there are regularly promotions where you can get credits for free.

Which balance can expire? If you receive credit gifted from a Microsoft promotion or use “Microsoft Rewards” for free credits, then this has an expiration date. On average, the expiration date is 90 days. So wait to redeem such bonuses if you are not currently looking to buy a game or there is nothing on sale.
Such free credits worth 5 or 10 euros are occasionally given by Microsoft to its users on Xbox, as shown by a user on Twitter. But this credit will eventually expire. So you cannot accumulate free credits over multiple promotions:
Which balance cannot expire? On your Xbox or Microsoft account, amounts of money that you have not paid for will expire. This means that if you top up your balance with a credit card or a gift card, the balance does not expire according to Microsoft. (via support.xbox.com).
So if you have topped up your balance with a gift card and there is still more than enough after your last purchase, you don’t have to worry about expiration.
