Since July 18, 2024, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn has been released, making it a new soulslike in the Game Pass. MyMMO editor Benedict Grothaus is into exactly these types of games and can currently recommend the Game Pass to anyone who feels the same.
What kind of offer is this? In the Game Pass, depending on the version you buy, you get access to games on PC, Xbox, or both platforms for a monthly fee.
The Game Pass Ultimate is the most comprehensive offer for both platforms with access to new games on their release day. You currently pay 17.99 Euros per month for this – and this amount is better invested right now than ever.
What kind of games are these? Recently, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn has been released, a new soulslike featuring flintlock pistols, axes, and magic. You fight as a pioneer against gods and undead, almost like a mix of Bloodborne and God of War.
Even in the test, Flintlock completely thrilled me. Normal, low-level enemies knocked me out multiple times and I stopped after 90 minutes out of frustration, only to start the game again a few minutes later and try once more.
Flintlock is thus the latest of several soulslikes that I have played with the Game Pass and can wholeheartedly recommend.
This is what it looks like in Flintlock when you lose a fight against a barrel:
4 strong soulslikes for under 20 Euros – Is one month even enough?
There are three more titles that I can recommend to every fan of soulsborne games. And the good news is: Even if you want to pay for the Game Pass for just one month, you should still be able to play through each of these games if you can dedicate about two hours daily and the whole day on weekends. According to How Long To Beat:
- for Lies of P about 30 hours for the main story, 37 with side quests
- for Remnant 2 approximately 18 hours for the main story, 29 with side quests
- for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty around 26 hours for the main story, 35 with side quests
If you want to see everything (“Completionist”) or play possible DLCs, you will naturally need longer. And how long Flintlock will take, I cannot estimate precisely yet, but it will probably fall into the category of Lies of P.
Especially Lies of P is a gem among the titles here. You play as Pinocchio and must uncover the secret of your creator, Geppetto. The story is excellently told, with various endings, but the centerpiece is the combat system, which heavily relies on precise parries. And it’s tricky too: I had to quit the game in the middle of the night to go to the gym.
Remnant 2 leans more towards the arcade direction and is particularly interesting for newcomers to the genre. Instead of wielding swords and the like, you shoot with various weapons and mystical abilities. A big advantage: Remnant has a co-op mode and an endless roguelite mode for replay value. Just trying it out cost me a whole free day back then.
The games mentioned here are all not blockbusters like Elden Ring, but truly great AA games with their own charm. Especially if you are looking for the unusual, you are definitely in the right place.
The Game Pass is now more expensive – How much do I have to pay?
There has recently been a price increase for the Game Pass. Instead of 14.99 Euros for the Game Pass Ultimate, new customers now pay 17.99 Euros since July 2024. The deal is therefore quite a bit more expensive, but it is still worth it.
If you only play on PC, you can save a bit. Here, the Game Pass costs only 11.99 Euros per month and includes the same games. However, there are a few useful offers to take advantage of:
- The first month can be obtained for one Euro as a new customer – if you have vacation, this is definitely enough to play through the four soulslikes.
- If you know someone who owns the Game Pass, they can gift you a 14-day free trial.
- At the colleagues over at GamePro, you’ll find more information about the Game Pass and its costs.
Soulslikes are known to be among the hardest games out there, and anyone who plays them should have a certain tolerance for frustration. While there are some pros who can play such games almost blind or in a completely crazy manner, most will literally have to fight their way through. Incidentally, this is also the case for the creator of the original games: “I am absolutely terrible” – Souls creator explains how he still completed Elden Ring
