Every year, FIFA fans face the same question: Which player will make it onto the cover of the latest FIFA installment? For the current FIFA edition, the French superstar Kylian Mbappé made it to the cover and was even featured on the 3 different FIFA versions with varying cover designs.
We are curious whether Mbappé will start a cover dynasty like Lionel Messi, who was proudly featured on FIFA covers 4 times in a row. Or will there be a new star on the cover this time? Let’s take a look at the potential candidates.
When will the cover star be revealed? So far, no official information about FIFA 22 is known. Perhaps we will learn more about the cover of FIFA 22 at the “EA Play Live” event on July 22. There, the new FIFA installment is finally expected to be presented.
Who could make it onto the cover of FIFA 22?
What kind of candidates are we looking at? Here we take a look at players who are big names in international football and reveal how likely their appearance as cover stars for FIFA 22 could be.
Kylian Mbappé
Kylian Mbappé has lost none of his star power and, despite a disappointing Euro Championship for the French team, managed to score an impressive 42 goals in 47 competitive matches for PSG. It’s quite possible that his engagement as cover star will be extended and we will see Mbappé again on the FIFA 22 cover.
First leaks already show the Frenchman even in the menu of the beta version of FIFA 22.
Robert Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski scored 41 goals in the previous Bundesliga season – a record! Additionally, in December 2020 he was also named the World Footballer of the Year. It’s logical that the best striker in the world should be a candidate for the FIFA cover. However, this seems extremely unlikely, as FC Bayern has a partnership with Konami and thus the FIFA competitor PES.
This makes Lewandowski’s chances as cover star rather unlikely.
Erling Haaland
Haaland is the absolute shooting star of the last year and quickly gained worldwide fame through his goals and impact. The BVB forward is a top favorite for the FIFA 22 cover and could very well be chosen by EA. Especially since the developer has already prominently featured the young Norwegian in FIFA 21 and showcased him in many menus and trailers.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo was on the cover of FIFA 18 and FIFA 19, back then still as a player of Real Madrid. Currently, Ronaldo is employed by Juventus Turin, and that is exactly the problem. Because for Juventus Turin, EA again lacks the licenses for the next FIFA installment, which is why the club is called Piemonte Calcio in FIFA.
Although Ronaldo will appear in FIFA, it is unlikely he will get a job as cover star at 35 years old due to the license issues.
Lionel Messi
Messi was featured on the covers of FIFA 13 to FIFA 16, thus holding the record for the most FIFA covers. However, an appearance as a FIFA 22 cover star seems unlikely, as EA appears to be leaning more towards young top talents.
Marcus Rashford
For a long time, there hasn’t been a Premier League player on a FIFA cover, the last one being Wayne Rooney for FIFA 10. It could well be that EA will take another look at the top tier of English football and select an absolute shooting star like Marcus Rashford.
Other candidates for the cover of FIFA 22
EA focuses on young players: In recent years, young superstars have played an increasingly significant role in FIFA installments. For example, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Joao Felix have been ambassadors of the FIFA series and can be seen everywhere around FIFA. Therefore, these players should not be ruled out for the cover of FIFA 22.
