Final Fantasy XIV is set to release on XBOX soon. The developers are now explaining how the subscription purchase will work, causing some frustration among players.
Why do we have to go through all this trouble? Final Fantasy XIV is expected to launch on XBOX on March 21, 2024. Recently, the developers announced how XBOX players can purchase the subscription and what is required to play the MMORPG on the console.
To play Final Fantasy XIV on XBOX, you first need to buy the game. Then, you need the XBOX Gamepass (or XBOX Live) in a form that allows online play on the console.
After that, you need to purchase the new “FFXIV Coins” currency as a microtransaction on XBOX. You will use this to pay for your monthly subscription for the game. However, if you subscribe on a different platform, you do not necessarily need the coins.
However, the new “FFXIV Coins” currency is not intended to replace the regular “Crystal” currency that can already be purchased for real money.

The Community Thinks It’s Really Bad
How is the community reacting to the announcement? As expected, the community is not pleased that, in addition to the two subscriptions, they now also have to exchange their money before paying.
On X (formerly Twitter) user @perchbird_ posted a comment with a screenshot of the announcement. He wrote: “It’s so funny that we’ve been asking SE for 10 years to simplify account management and billing, and instead of doing that, they’ve made it even more complicated for no reason.”
@illumi_x3 responds on X below: “I’m pretty sure this is Microsoft’s way of getting their cut while SE gets their share for subscriptions. As far as I remember, the issue of FF14 not being on XBOX was that they wanted their own servers or that users should pay for Live while also paying for their subscription for 14.”
@xcx_loona questions on X, doubting it’s Microsoft’s fault: “It’s really funny how everyone is quick to blame Microsoft exclusively, and for no reason. The billing system will always be garbage, and the player base will love it.”
