What is Battlefield 2042? This is the latest installment of the major shooter series from Electronic Arts and is developed by the studios DICE with support from Ripple Effect Studios (formerly DICE LA) and Criterion Games.
- The Battlefield series has always been known for its huge battlefields and material battles, where large groups of players come together.
- Players can utilize military vehicles and aircraft or fight infantry against enemy ground troops. Battlefield also focuses on destruction. This adds another tactical aspect.
- While the last installment Battlefield V set its scene in World War II, Battlefield 2042 will take place in the future.
- However, it will not be a wacky sci-fi shooter and mostly adheres to our present time. Nevertheless, there are some technological advancements like robotic dogs or other features and gadgets.
- If you’re hoping for a story campaign, you might be disappointed. There is no single-player campaign. However, there is an overarching story to the multiplayer of Battlefield 2042, in which Germany goes bankrupt and the EU collapses.
When exactly does Battlefield 2042 come out? On Friday, November 19, 2021, is the official release of the shooter. The game will then be available for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. A preload is already running for those who have purchased the game.
The early access started for buyers of certain editions and EA Play subscribers on November 12. Accordingly, many players have already been able to play and share their impressions.

Battlefield 2042 – What’s inside?
Why should I check this out? Especially players who are rather bored of current shooters like CoD: Warzone and are looking for an alternative should check out Battlefield 2042. The maps are significantly larger, the destruction and the numerous vehicles and aircraft create a certain feeling of actually being in a battle.
There are three major modes that you can play:
- All-Out Warfare – Includes the two classic Battlefield modes Conquest and Breakthrough
- Hazard Zone – This mode strongly resembles games like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown. You land on a map and need to recover data drives while contending with players and NPCs
- Battlefield Portal – This mode allows you to create your own modes, as well as play maps and modes from three Battlefield classics
In All-Out Warfare, battles feature teams of 64 against 64 players, meaning for the first time in the series, 128 players will be on the map. The PS4 and Xbox One are exceptions, as they only support 32 against 32 players for technical reasons.
With random events like tornadoes that can completely change a match, there are also weather elements that play a significant role and require specific tactics. The 7 maps are huge and offer variety.
If you have always wanted to fly through a tornado with a wingsuit or see a rocket launch fail right in front of your eyes, you should definitely take a look.
For the first time in the series, there are also no fixed classes, but new specialists. These are essentially the classes of Battlefield 2042, only that players here have much more freedom than with typical class systems in other games. However, there is a major BUT:
Problems overshadow the early access phase of Battlefield 2042
How the EA release of Battlefield 2042 went: Even during the beta, it became clear that Battlefield 2042 has significant technical issues. Unfortunately, the developers did not manage to eliminate all the problems by the release.
While some improvements have been made, it has become clear that many of the issues still persist in early access:
- The performance is often poor on PC, optimization is lacking.
- Assault rifles scatter so much, that they are even worse than submachine guns at medium distances.
- The interface is not well received by players, with some even creating their own designs.
- Weapon attachments often do not work as the description says.
- Overall, the balancing of some vehicles and weapons is still not right.
- Revives are sometimes not possible, some players cannot respawn due to a bug.
However, there is already a first update that addresses problems like rubber banding and has fixed some other bugs.
Other major issues such as the scatter of assault rifles, the OP hovercrafts, or weapon balancing DICE is also aware of and is reportedly working on a fix.
If you can overlook such problems, Battlefield 2042 is still a comprehensive package that provides many players with a lot of joy.
