What is the deal with CoD Modern Warfare 2 Remastered? For over a year, there have been rumors about a remake of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
But last week, leaks and rumors intensified and on March 31, 2020, it finally happened: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered was released on 31.03. – without any prior official announcement or major fanfare.
Some might wonder whether buying the classic is worth it today. After all, many players are likely already familiar with the second part of the Modern Warfare series.
However, some have never played CoD MW 2 or want to experience the story of Task Force 141 in a new light. Therefore, we summarize what you should know about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered before making your purchase decision.
By the way, work is apparently already underway on a remaster of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
CoD: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered – Release, Price, Content
When exactly is CoD MW 2 Remastered coming out? The remake has been available for purchase in the PS Store since 6:00 PM on March 31. However, Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is currently only playable on PS4.
What about Xbox One and PC? On these platforms, CoD MW 2 Remastered can already be pre-ordered, but it can be played on PC and Xbox One starting at 6:00 PM on April 30. Until then, the remaster can only be enjoyed on PS4.
How much does Modern Warfare 2 Remastered cost? The remastered version costs €24.99 in the respective platform stores. The price is the same on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
What content does Modern Warfare 2 Remastered offer? The remastered version is officially called “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered”. And here’s what it includes:
- Modern Warfare Remastered is not a complete remake of the game, but only brings back the single-player campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in a technically enhanced state.
- You can now experience the campaign in full HD with improved textures, sound, animations, physical rendering, HDR lighting, and some additional effects.
- There is no multiplayer in CoD MW 2 Remastered, at least not its own. The SpecOps mode (co-op) is also not included.
- Additionally, all buyers of the remaster receive the classic Ghost bundle “Underwater Demolition Team” for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019. You can then use the contents in traditional multiplayer or in the Battle Royale mode Warzone.
- This bundle includes the UDT Ghost skin, 2 weapon blueprints, a weapon talisman, a finisher, a calling card, an emblem, and 2 battle pass tier skips.

Do I need anything else to play the remaster? The campaign of Modern Warfare 2 is available as a standalone.
To use the cosmetics, either the paid Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 or the free-to-play version Call of Duty: Warzone is required.
Is the German version censored? Yes, the campaign in the German version is censored. The controversial mission “No Russian” does not allow you to shoot civilians. However, this is the only cut.
Who will benefit from the Remastered version of CoD Modern Warfare 2?
CoD Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is worth it for you if you haven’t played the original from 2009.
Generally, the campaigns of the original Modern Warfare trilogy are considered by many fans and critics to be among the best in the entire CoD series, alongside the one from Black Ops 1.
And the story of Modern Warfare 2 is regarded by some as the best of the MW trilogy. It offers a captivating, adrenaline-pumping narrative and plays out like an interactive action movie. And despite linear levels or scripted scenes, the campaign of Modern Warfare 2 manages to entertain and contains numerous memorable moments that many still remember more than 11 years later.
In short: If you have even the slightest interest in shooters, enjoy well-staged military scenarios, and have not played the campaign of Modern Warfare 2 yet, this remaster is hard to go wrong with.
If you are a veteran wanting to experience it all again in slightly enhanced graphics, full HD, and new effects on the current console generation or PC, you should also find joy, as long as you don’t have overly high expectations for the graphics. But more on that later.
The remastered version is not worth it for you if high-end graphics are your top priority. Yes, the graphics now offer full HD, better textures, and some contemporary effects. However, many character models and animations still originate from the original from 2009.
If you expect to experience the campaign of MW2 with the graphics and quality of Modern Warfare 2019, you will probably be disappointed. The game looks significantly better than it did in 2009, but especially in direct comparison to the reboot of Modern Warfare, MW 2 Remastered still shows its age in some aspects.
If you specifically yearn for the critically acclaimed and revolutionary multiplayer experience of the original Modern Warfare 2 – it is not included in this remaster.
Although the original MP of CoD MW 2 is still considered by many to be the best multiplayer experience of the entire Call of Duty franchise, only popular maps from Modern Warfare 2 are being introduced into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019. An official remake of the multiplayer is also not planned for the future – even if a leak now claims otherwise.
If you have already played the original campaign and don’t necessarily need to experience it again, you can skip the remaster – unless you really want the accompanying bundle for Modern Warfare 2019 and want it for €25.
