WoW demon Cortyn has once again cast the line while everyone else leveled up. There was thick loot.
When the starting signal for the Early Access of the new expansion of World of Warcraft went off last Friday, I immediately dove into the quests. I had only played the campaign in the beta to a small extent, but I had a rough plan on how I wanted to approach the situation:
- My priestess will only complete the main campaign and dungeons to unlock all features up to level 80 for the account.
- I will then complete the side quests with other characters to level them up and see the rest of the story.
Treasure Swarms – A Guarantee for Great Loot
Due to this plan, I arrived in the third area, in Hallowfall, after just a few hours – after all, the main campaign is relatively short. There, for the first time, I noticed a special fish swarm called “Whispers of the Deep.” It sounded so suspicious to me that I immediately pulled out my old artifact fishing rod from Legion to see what could be caught.

The very first cast brought me a pack of Darkmoon cards – the second and third as well. It immediately put dollar signs in my eyes and reminded me of my fishing escapades in Dragonflight.
After all, the Darkmoon cards can be converted into sets that then yield a powerful piece of jewelry with item level 577 – quite high for Early Access.
I spent the next six hours – aside from a few minor breaks – exclusively fishing, bringing in around 50 treasure swarms. I flew continuously along the coast of Hallowfall, fishing all the swarms to make room for new ones.
When a fish swarm is fished out, a new one spawns elsewhere. Since I was in warmode and hardly anyone was around on my realm, I also had no competition.

The yield was impressive. Alongside 120 Darkmoon cards, I also got plenty of (tradeable) transmog pieces, book pages that improve my alts’ fishing, and further fishing upgrades that would only become relevant later.
In sales, the cards and transmog brought me nearly 500,000 gold. Not to mention that I could perfectly use the hundreds of fish that came in for leveling my cooking skills.
By now, fishing has become a ritual for me with a new WoW expansion. After I’ve “played through” the first hours, I like to dedicate myself to fishing to get that profession to the maximum level as quickly as possible. This way, it’s also very relaxing to chat in the guild chat.
That now for the second time in a row a hefty gold bonus came my way is a nice thing – it just ensures that I will do the same in “Midnight” again.
“Reproducing” this is no longer possible, by the way. Due to the connected auction houses, there are currently so many Darkmoon card sets that the price for individual sets has already dropped to below 10,000 gold. However, anyone who plans to level fishing anyway might want to take my route as a model – because at least a few extra gold coins and some transmog items will drop.
This “little” detour has ensured that I arrived at level 80 significantly later than many of my friends – but now I have a nice cushion of gold and so much fish that I can barely keep up with consuming it. Sometimes it’s worth it to deviate from the known path in WoW and simply do something “completely different.” At least that was a clear advantage of the Early Access version for me.
