What kind of game is this? Ashes of Creation is a sandbox MMORPG set in a fantasy environment that plays in a huge open world. You fight against world bosses and compete against each other in PvP. Additionally, there will be a system where you level areas, improving cities, and altering aspects of the game world – the so-called “nodes”.
The development of the MMORPG started back in 2015. In the meantime, the switch from Unreal Engine 4 to the newer Unreal Engine 5 has occurred. Since January 16, 2025, the second phase of Alpha 2 for Ashes of Creation is running. This phase is expected to last until May 1 and allow testers 24/7 access to the alpha content. There are currently no specific dates for the beta.

That’s why I have high hopes for AoC: I have never hidden the fact that I am very excited about Ashes of Creation. I consider the node system to be potentially genre-defining, and the MMORPG has been making visible progress for a long time already, and since mid-2024 the technology seems to be ready to implement the ambitious plans.
The fact that there was some criticism regarding the playable content at the start of Alpha 2 doesn’t bother me too much. It’s just an alpha. A lot will change and improve before the final launch. Even in this current, unfinished version, there are quite a number of players who are having a lot of fun with the testing phase – including a former Blizzard developer.
Additionally, I can sense the passion for the genre and the game from the project’s head – Steven Sharif – in the monthly updates and regularly held community talks. Here, a fan of MMORPGs is making a game for genre fans. And he has enough funds available to actually reach the ambitious goals.
