Maybe you no longer play these games, but they have had the most influence on you and your gaming preferences. Which MMOs are you into?
Which games are we talking about? As kids and teenagers, many of us spent entire weekends gaming. We played until the sun came up the next day because these games had us hooked.
Most of you will have that one game that has become the benchmark for all subsequent games. When you talk about other games and list their pros and cons, this particular game is often used as a positive example: “If this feature were like in MMO-X, then MMO-Y would be so much better!”
Often, these are really big names, like World of Warcraft, the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, or the forefathers of their genre, Ultima Online and EverQuest 2.
What is the MMO that has become the holy grail for you?
Let us know in the comments which game has shaped you forever and why.
I’ll just start here.
These games have influenced me: For me, it was definitely the first MMORPG from Square Enix: Final Fantasy XI. Even though it is incredibly user-unfriendly, it told amazing stories in its expansions that have forever become my benchmark for storytelling in MMORPGs.
I felt joy and sorrow with characters like Prishe and Aldo. And very few MMOs have managed to meet my storytelling standards that FFXI established back then.
Of course, it’s not the only MMO that has influenced my taste. When it comes to gunplay, I compare almost all shooters to Destiny. Even though other aspects of Destiny may not be as good, the exhilarating feeling of landing a headshot with the Fatebringer is hard to beat.
And in isometric A-RPGs, Path of Exile has blown me away with the sheer variety of different builds that can be incredibly powerful. How cool is it to sweep away huge hordes of enemies as if they were dust?
So, tell us: Which MMO or multiplayer game has shaped your taste so much that you still bring it up as a positive example years later? Are there multiple games? Let us know in the comments!
