Pay2Win has infiltrated MMORPGs over the years and is not particularly popular among many fans of the genre. Which games are the worst in this regard?
The term “Pay2Win” (also Pay to Win, P2W, etc.) will be known to almost every MMORPG fan. It refers to the option to pay for certain advantages in games. For example, you get more EXP, more money, better drops, more chances for resurrection, and so on.
It is probably the most controversial “practice” in MMORPGs, which has already caused many discussions. Everyone seems to have their own definition of what the “Win” in P2W actually means.
- Some say that you can only truly win in PvP. If you can’t buy advantages in competitive PvP, the game is not Pay2Win.
- Others say that there is no Pay2Win as long as everything in the game can be earned without spending money.
- For the third group, any kind of purchasable advantages, including boost potions and level skips, is already Pay2Win.
- For others, optional cosmetic items are considered Pay2Win because, for example, they want to have all mounts in the game and must pay for them.
It is often difficult to precisely and universally determine when an MMORPG is “Pay2Win”. While one group of players finds an MMORPG completely over the top Pay2Win, it can be completely unproblematic for another group.
Therefore, we want to know from you what you think “Pay2Win” means and which MMORPGs are the biggest “sinners” in this area.
