With Shadowlands, a new, unique feature enters World of Warcraft: Covenants. The choice should be more or less binding, and each Covenant has its own advantages. Choosing could therefore become tricky. MeinMMO helps you with some questions to make your decision.
What are Covenants? In the new, major feature in the upcoming expansion Shadowlands, you choose which of the four factions you join and help. The options are:
- Kyrian
- Venthyr
- Night Fae
- Nekrolords
Each of these factions has its own role in the Shadowlands, its own tasks, rewards, and connections to players or famous characters from WoW. In our overview article, you will find everything you need to know about Covenants in Shadowlands.
Why should I join a Covenant? The Covenants are not just a story decision. They also influence how you play. For example, you receive special cosmetics, mounts, and companions with each Covenant, as well as special quests to further increase your reputation with the respective Covenant. Covenants even determine how you die.
Even more importantly, each Covenant rewards you with two abilities: one Covenant ability for all followers and one ability that is specifically suited to your class. This means that depending on your class and specialization, a particular Covenant may be better or worse. Additionally, there are Soulbinds, which make you even stronger and currently make a Covenant the top choice for many experts.
This hurdle is one that few groups will fail, as good teamwork and mastery of the class have a greater impact. The Covenants are only relevant for “min-maxing”. However, it may happen that in group searches phrases like “No more Venthyr” are thrown around. A solid, well-coordinated group of friends or acquaintances is truly worth its weight in gold.
The choice of a Covenant is relatively binding, and switching is said to take a lot of time and come with several drawbacks. This causes some criticism in advance. However, Blizzard has already confirmed that they will not pull the “emergency brake”. The Covenants are thus coming as they are planned.

However, it is important that you can identify with the Covenant, as enjoyment of the game takes precedence. If you do not enjoy what you are playing, you usually do not play for long.
