The Elder Scrolls Online is a successful MMORPG. However, our author Jürgen Horn is especially encouraged to play by his pet. That’s why the cat is to blame for the poor man not playing other online role-playing games anymore.
What’s the deal with Jürgen and cats? I, Jürgen, have always had cats around me throughout my life. First, there were the semi-wild barn cats from my grandparents’ nearby farm, and later various generations of house cats.
Thus, I have a genuine fondness for the purring furballs and eagerly consume everything related to these little furry noses. I constantly post pictures of my current two cats on Instagram and even once supported a crowdfunding campaign for a cat version of the Pen & Paper role-playing game DSA with a bunch of money!
3 reasons why the cat always gets me to play ESO
However, every time I look at one of my cats, the thought of a very special MMORPG comes to mind: The Elder Scrolls Online. The game is firmly associated with the term “cat” for me. There are several reasons for that:
I am a cat in ESO myself: The most obvious reason for my association of ESO with the cat is quite simple: I am a cat in the game! Since the beta of ESO, I have been playing a cunning Khajiit nightblade with black fur.
Later, two more Khajiit were added as twinks that I named after my two current cats Cleo and Lizzy and hence are called “C’Leo the Swift” and “L’Izzy the Silken.
Additionally, I can ride large cats in ESO and have small cats as pets. I can even build a house, fill it with cushions, and then place more cat pets and mounts all around! This way, maybe someday I will have the cat house I’ve always wanted in real life. I just need to craft enough cushions and collect more cat pets.
I still can’t get enough of Elsweyr: Anyone who has followed my reporting and my streams in 2019 about Elsweyr knows that I am a huge fan of this expansion for ESO. For a long time, I predicted an Elsweyr expansion, and finally, it arrived. However, shortly after, my son was born, and since I play ESO quite leisurely, I have not been able to explore Elsweyr as much as I would have liked.
Therefore, the sight of my cats always lures me into Tamriel during my limited free time, to complete a quest here, to save some cats from a dragon, or just to stroll through the marketplace of Krempen and listen to the NPCs.
As cool as I find the upcoming Greymoor expansion with Skyrim, Elsweyr is unlikely to be topped.
ESO simply has such wonderfully cool cat content: Lastly, my cats always remind me of the wonderfully quirky cat content from ESO. Elsweyr has also significantly added to this and often made me laugh:
- For the first time, the Alfiq Khajiit can be seen in Elsweyr. They look like house cats, wear clothes, speak in delightfully squeaky voices, and are actually powerful mages. Nonetheless, they suffer a bit from inferiority complexes.
- There’s an extremely cool scene in the Elsweyr trailer where the story protagonist Khamira is roared at by a dragon and defiantly hisses back in true cat fashion. That’s exactly what a real cat would do if it found itself in a difficult situation.
- There’s a slew of light-hearted quests that fully target cat content. First and foremost, a mission where you carry out a sort of heist. For that, you first have to assemble a quirky expert team in true heist movie style. Among them is a constantly drunk Alfiq cat who in the most inconvenient case throws up a hairball.
- Also unforgettable: The quest in which the notorious chaos god and crowd favorite Sheogorath appears as a nasty cat and terrorizes a monastery with his cruel jokes. I don’t want to spoil the ending here, but it is very “cat-like”.
However, even if you’re not as fond of cats as I am, ESO offers plenty of motivation to play. My colleague Larissa Then doesn’t play a Khajiit but has discovered her passion for role-playing in ESO for the first time.
