In cinemas, Avengers: Endgame is currently breaking records. Where is the matching game for it? Is there perhaps even a big MMO? In fact, Square Enix is working on such a project – but a release is likely not expected until late 2020 for the PS5.
This is the situation: “Avengers: Endgame” has been running in theaters since April 24. In advance, it was anticipated that it could be the biggest opening of a movie of all time.
And at the moment, it looks like the film is indeed going to make more money than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (via Deadline) and become a mega-blockbuster.
As reported by “Variety“, Avengers: Endgame is on track to break several records for a movie.
Where is the game for it? Often, big hits like Avengers: Endgame are accompanied by video games.
There have already been two games from Electronic Arts for Star Wars with Star Wars Battlefront.
Currently, the situation looks rather thin for Marvel. There are indeed recent titles like:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 (2018),
- “Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series” for PS4, Xbox One, PC, iOS, and Android (2017)
- and the VR adventure “Marvel’s Iron Man” for PS4 VR
but little regarding the Avengers as a team.
What about Marvel MMOs? For a long time, one could still play “Marvel Heroes” here in Europe, a kind of Diablo MMO with superheroes, which even did well for several years.
However, this came to a disaster at the end of 2017 – Disney revoked the license and the game had to close.
There are still alternatives on iOS and Android. The Korean mobile giant Netmarble has secured the rights and releases mobile MMOs like Marvel Future Fight with the Marvel license.
This is indeed a deep collection RPG, but it also has the typical “mobile grind mechanics” that quickly entice one to seek the “easy way” through the digital wallet.
Therefore, Marvel Future Fight might not be to everyone’s taste but does have events and updates related to every film.
Of course, one can also just play Fortnite for free and feel like Thanos, Hawkeye, Thor, Captain America, or Iron Man in the Avengers: Endgame mode. This works on any current gaming platform.
Avengers Project – the hope of Marvel fans
This could be the big game: The most interesting Marvel title in development is probably the “Avengers Project”, which has been in development by Square Enix for quite a while.
According to early information, it could be the “Marvel game” of the coming years: a kind of “online world with superheroes and plenty of action.”
However, Square Enix announced the title long before release.
As a result, there is still little information circulating about the Avengers Project. One hopes to possibly get more information at E3 2019 in June.
A release could then happen at the launch of the PS5, probably in November 2020.
Until then, Marvel fans waiting for a “big game” about the Avengers will likely have to be patient.
