When I don’t want to think in WoW, I play Demon Hunter

When Cortyn puts the brain on low flame, the Demon Hunter is unleashed in World of Warcraft . Because it requires hardly any thinking, but is a lot of fun.

Anyone who knows me a bit knows that I really like the Priest class in World of Warcraft, since Burning Crusade, which is almost 13 years ago. I enjoy playing a healer, but I also love Shadowform and all the cool tricks like Leap of Faith, Mind Control, or Mind Vision. That’s also the reason why I now have 3 Priests at level 120 – one for each specialization.

But the Priest has a big disadvantage: One has to really put in effort while playing. But luckily, there is a class where you can switch your brain to low flame to simply have fun without thinking much about what you are actually doing – the Demon Hunter.

A while ago, I wrote a column about this class and how much uncomplicated fun it offers. That hasn’t changed to this day; in fact, it has become even stronger due to Azerite abilities and better gear.

WoW Demon Hunter so cool

“Hero Classes” only need one ability

Eye Beam is the answer to everything. And that’s no exaggeration, because Eye Beam is indeed the answer to absolutely every situation. No matter what threat I encounter, Eye Beam makes short work of everything.

  • A strong opponent? Eye Beam.
  • Two opponents? Eye Beam.
  • Many opponents? Eye Beam.
  • About to die? Eye Beam.
  • Jehovah’s Witnesses at the door? Eye Beam.

The laser not only deals extremely high damage to single targets but also tears apart entire groups of enemies in no time. With a high amount of life steal, it also provides significant healing. Because that’s not enough, with the right talent, it activates Metamorphosis for a few seconds, giving additional speed and life steal. Oh yes, even more speed is added from Azerite abilities.

Overall, the “rotation” for the Demon Hunter isn’t particularly difficult since there are only 4 real damage abilities, one of which I can eliminate through talents if one is overwhelmed by 4 buttons. If you just keep pressing the button that is not on cooldown, you already win.

And before the offended Demon Hunters jump out of their holes, thinking their class is much more complicated because one also has to interrupt spells and pay attention to proper movement: Every other class has to do that too.

There is definitely a difference between a masterfully played Demon Hunter and how I play it. There are certainly fine nuances that can squeeze a bit more performance out of the character. But that doesn’t matter to me. The absolute minimum that can be achieved with the Demon Hunter, by simply keeping all 5 buttons (including Metamorphosis) on cooldown, is already so absurdly powerful that it does not matter to me.

In the DPS ranking, Demon Hunters are often right at the top.

Demon Hunters are the kings of Visions

I noticed this particularly in the Horrific Visions. I usually do them alone, as they remind me of the Mage Tower and the Chromie scenario, and I love having a gameplay area where I’m only by myself and know: If I mess this up, I am solely to blame. By the way, soon you will be able to enter the visions more often.

And what can I say? I could hardly stop laughing. Where I barely manage the vision with my Priestess with 2 active masks just before my sanity fails, it is completely different with my Demon Hunter.

With the Demon Hunter, I can even put on 3 of the Faceless Masks and increase the difficulty even more.

The saying “like a hot knife through butter” is not strong enough for what happens on my screen. I was able to fully complete three of the four bonus areas before I had to use my first of three “healing orbs.” In the end, I stood there with 750 remaining sanity, one healing orb, and still my emergency resurrection before the final boss. I had barely used half of my resources and had progressed further than I ever dared to do with my Priestess.

Or in short: With the Demon Hunter, I effortlessly achieve objectives that I can’t even complete with my 13-year-main.

Demon Hunters are fun because they are so easy to play

I didn’t achieve that because the Demon Hunter is an incredibly strong character in my hands. I achieved it because the Demon Hunter is so damn powerful, no matter how badly you mess up.

But that’s somehow also the beauty of the Demon Hunter. When I reach my limits after a challenging round of “Mythic+” with the Priest and just want to relax, I log into my “4-button class” and simply have fun without having to think too much.

Anyone who wants to complain that I’m slandering their favorite class here and that it can only be played well if you’re the skill god anointed by Medivh, I warn you: My Eye Beam is ready again.
