You want to create a character in Destiny 2 but aren’t sure which class or race to choose? No problem: We help with the first big decision and show you what powerful abilities await you.
This is the first important decision: You have successfully installed Destiny 2 and spent what feels like half an eternity downloading updates from the last years, and right after starting the game, two consequential decisions await you: Which class and which race should your new Guardian represent?
When it comes to choosing a race, you can rest assured, as all options have precisely 0 impact on your gaming experience. The same goes for the choice of gender. So choose purely based on personal taste.
You have the following options:
- The Humans – The last survivors of the nearly destroyed Earth
- The Awoken – They were once humans eons ago before their journey turned them into mysterious beings in the vastness of space
- The Exos – These are mechanical creatures equipped with human consciousness through long-forgotten technology
In the character editor, you can choose from further cosmetic options like hairstyles or war paint. You can decide in-game whether to remove your helmet in safe zones and proudly present your face to the world.
The class choice in Destiny 2 – Which one should you take?
Which class should you choose? More important than the choice of race is your class choice in Destiny 2. Because the classes significantly influence the entire gameplay.
Each class has unique abilities, grenades, or powerful ultimates (called Supers) and items that the other two do not have access to. Additionally, the 3 classes are divided into 3 subclasses (focuses), each with 3 specializations. But don’t worry, Destiny 2 is always very clear, and you can easily switch between subclasses and specializations at will.
But at this point, a very important note: No class is superior to all others or has overwhelming advantages. All activities in the Destiny universe can be easily mastered with any class. Also, every weapon can be used by any class.
These 3 classes exist in Destiny 2:
- Warlocks: Warlocks visually resemble traditional wizards with their cloaks and robes. Only instead of boring conventional magic, they use twice as cool space magic. They always have what is called a Rift at their disposal. With it, you can heal health or boost outgoing damage.
- Hunters: Described as daring and nimble outlaws. Many players love their capes. Hunters have an ability for a dodging jump. This allows them to reload weapons and quickly change positions.
- Titans: The Titan is described as disciplined and proud but also aggressive. He usually wears bulky armor and resembles tanks or paladins from typical role-playing games. Accordingly, every Titan can erect a shield wall (barricade) on the battlefield to provide cover.
We recommend following your gut feeling when choosing a class. Because contrary to popular belief, bulky Titans endure as much in combat as the seemingly fragile Hunters. Once you have delved deeper into Destiny 2, you can worry about stats; for the first steps, these hardly matter and are adjustable at any time.
How powerful the subclasses are in Destiny 2
Here we would like to briefly introduce some of the subclasses and their playstyles. Naming all specializations, let alone all abilities, would exceed the scope of the article. Additionally, exploration and experimentation are a big part of the excitement of Destiny 2. By the way, since the Forsaken expansion, 9 new focuses have found their way into the game.
The powerful subclasses of the Warlocks:
- The Stormcaller: Have you always felt drawn to the dark side of the Force? Then the Stormcaller is just your thing. Bad lightning bolts shoot from your fingers like the evil emperor. Depending on your tuning, you can chain the deadly electric shocks or summon a lightning turret that won’t leave your side.
- The Dawnblade: With this specialization, your Warlock summons a flaming sword and can fly for a while. You can soar over your enemies like an AC-130 and rain fire from the sky.
- The Well of Radiance: Instead of attacking with your flaming sword, you slam it into the ground, igniting the area around you. You and your whole team are thus enhanced and can heal completely in no time. With additional support abilities, you become a healer who can deal heavy damage.
The powerful subclasses of the Hunters:
- The Nightstalker: With the Nightstalker focus, your Hunter becomes invisible, confuses enemies with smoke bombs, and can spot targets with a kind of wallhack and lure them into traps. As a Super ability, you summon a ghostly bow or daggers made of dark energy.
- The Golden Gun: You can make the Hunter a true sharpshooter, becoming more precise with each hit and throwing burning knives. On command, you summon a fiery Western revolver that knocks down just about everything with a single shot.
- The Arcstrider: With this choice, Hunters emphasize their agility. You can either dodge nearly any attack or block them and send them back to the sender without detours. You are also dangerous, as the arc staff serves as your melee weapon.
The powerful subclasses of the Titans:
- The Sunbreaker: Do you want to swing a hammer made of pure solar energy? The Titan has two of them. You can either throw your explosive hammer like the god Thor or swing a man-sized hammer and flatten everything in your path.
- The Sentinel: For Guardians with a penchant for Captain America, the Sentinel is interesting. At the push of a button, you equip a shield that blocks everything and can be thrown – ricochet hits from walls included.
- The Fist of Havoc: If you want to emulate the strongest of all superheroes, you’ll be happy with the Superman Titan. You can fly through the air and slam down to the ground like a rocket. There’s not much left except devastation.
As mentioned at the beginning, in Destiny 2 you are not limited to a specific subclass. Even in the middle of a fight, switching is possible, inviting experimentation. You also cannot “mess up the build” or anything like that.
Have fun and try everything out. What is your favorite class and why? Let us know in the comments.
