Tuque Games announced that they are developing a new game based on the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Is this perhaps an MMORPG?
What exactly was announced? The developer’s official website mentions a new game for D&D, which is based on the classic lore and aims to take the genre to new heights. The team is currently looking for a “Narrative Designer”, and the job description provides some insights into the project.

The focus is on quests
What is known about the game? From the job description, we know:
- A dialogue system with branching questions and answers is to be developed.
- There will be quests and cutscenes.
- Lore plays a significant role, and NPCs are expected to be deeply developed.
Why could it become an MMORPG? Quests and dialogues point to a role-playing game. However, Tuque Games is not known as a developer of pure single-player titles. With Livelock, the studio released a co-op shooter in 2016.
The team therefore has experience with online games. This leads to the assumption that another online game is currently in development.
Whether it will be an MMORPG or perhaps a co-op RPG remains to be seen. In any case, the focus apparently lies on story and quests.

A D&D online game would make sense
That’s why a new D&D MMORPG would be interesting: Dungeons & Dragons Online has been around for 13 years, and you can really tell that the game is showing its age. Furthermore, the tabletop template has evolved and reached its 5th edition. Players are requesting computer games for this edition. The D&D MMO Neverwinter is still based on the 4th edition, which has been heavily modified.
Therefore, it would only make sense if the D&D license holder Wizards of the Coast were interested in a new computer game that also utilizes the new rules.
Online games are still very popular. With games-as-a-service titles, a lot of money can be made. Therefore, a D&D online game would make quite a bit of sense.
What exactly Tuque Games will deliver is still to be seen. However, an online game, specifically an MMORPG, is certainly conceivable.
