Recently, publisher Ubisoft announced a completely new game in the The-Division universe. The new game is expected to be titled The Division: Heartland and will be free-to-play. What is officially known about Division Heartland so far? Since the announcement of Heartland by Ubisoft, we know the following facts:
- The developer is Red Storm Entertainment, who have also been involved in earlier Tom Clancy games.
- The game will be free-to-play.
- Heartland will not require prior knowledge of previous Division games.
- It will be a standalone game, not a Division 2 expansion.
- The release will be in late 2021 or early 2022.

The Division: Heartland – Will it be a survival shooter, battle royale, or trading card game?
The YouTuber widdz has shared his thoughts in a video and primarily deduces from the information about the free-to-play model and the lack of required prior knowledge that it must be a battle royale game.
Games of this type usually only have a chance as free-to-play models, and if it is supposed to be a pure PvP game, you don’t need much knowledge of the background story either.
This is what is known from the community: On reddit, speculation is rampant. While many there also assume a battle royale game, there are also voices that speculate more on a survival shooter.
Particularly, the gameplay of the hardcore shooter Escape from Tarkov would, according to some users, match well with The Division. And the setting in the “Heartlands”, which is interpreted by many as the sparsely populated central regions of America, would be suitable for survival game elements.
- User StainlessPot says, “I think a survival/scavenging game that is closer to Tarkov would fit better. They have the collecting and extracting gameplay in a basic form in the Dark Zones, and you can add NPC enemies that could become more dangerous the longer you take before extracting.”
- Androidspud has a slightly different idea: “I think they are making a 4 vs 4 game with survival mechanics and adding base building for team upgrades. That could become an interesting game. You have the option to go out as a 4-man group or split into smaller groups or solo players to search for resources, with the risk of encountering the other team.”
- Kestrel1207, on the other hand, believes that Heartland will simply be another loot shooter: “Am I the only one who thinks it will just be a ‘normal’ Division game, meaning it will be a loot shooter?”
