While hell has broken loose over Bungie and many positions have been cut, many fans of Destiny 2 are now wondering what the future holds for the loot shooter and its content. We have sifted through many insider reports and now share the situation you can probably expect.
Will the content of Destiny 2 change? Those who have been keeping an eye on the current situation at Bungie will know that things are not going well for the developers right now. Many positions have been cut, outsourced, or redistributed, and many teams from Destiny 2 have also been affected – including teams responsible for the story as well as activities.
After such a disaster, many players hope that Destiny 2 will still maintain its course regarding its content, but according to insiders, this will not be the case. Bungie’s plans have also changed, but take this information with caution – Bungie has not officially communicated anything yet.
Insiders reveal new content model
What abundance of content can players expect in the future? Journalists Jason Schreier and Paul Tassi, two well-known figures in the Destiny community, are known for their credible insider information. According to them, as well as some information from Jeff Grubb and leakers, Destiny 2 will no longer provide major expansions like those known from The Final Shape or Witch Queen.
According to insider information, there will instead be so-called content drops. The abundance of content in these drops is expected to be on the same level as the content of “Into the Light” or “Shadowkeep”, meaning they are more likely to be smaller expansions.
According to leakers, these content packs will be released alongside season passes. The content packs are free, while the season passes are paid. Each year, you can expect two content packs and two seasons. A quick overview of the assumptions can be found here:

- Content packs are as large in scope as “Into the Light” or “Shadowkeep”
- Content packs are free for everyone – only season passes cost something
- A season is expected to last 6 months
- Greater focus on PvE and PvP activities
- The story of the season will take a back seat and there will only be an introductory mission followed by grinding activities
- “Rallies” is an event that is expected to occur 2x per season
- Introduces new activities for PvP and PvE.
- In “Rallies”, you can only wear seasonal gear and participate that way
What about the episodes and codename: Frontiers? There is no information available on these projects, but we assume that the episodes are almost finished and will still be released. As for Frontiers, we strongly assume that Bungie may have either scrapped or postponed that plan for now.
Will Destiny 2 die because of this? That actually depends on your perspective. Fans who are only looking for new content and activities might be pleased with the new focus. However, if you are a long-time fan and want to see cinematic stories, you will likely be disappointed.
Bungie has not yet commented on the studio’s future plans, but the team is likely to speak out in the coming weeks in their TWiD and provide an update.
If the information turns out to be true, Bungie would gradually lose many players. 6 months for a season is a long time, and if there is no new content, Destiny 2 will be left in a semi-dead state.
Sony is transferring a large portion of the specialists to Marathon so that it can finally be released, but whether this title will save Bungie remains unclear.
