The community of Lord of the Rings Online is planning a very special event right before Christmas, which aims to recreate the journey of the companions – but with a twist.
What exactly is the plan? The player Metamutt presents the new community project for Lord of the Rings Online on Reddit. On December 20, 2025, at 4:00 PM, the largest group of companions ever is set to depart from Hobbiton. The destination: Mordor, of course.
They intend to reach Mount Doom within a stream. Without fast travel. Riding, laughing, and singing. Due to the enormous distance that all participating companions must cover, the organizers warn: “Yes, it could take all day.”
The next expansion for Lord of the Rings Online is already on the horizon:
How to join the companions
How can I participate? A Discord server created for the event currently has a poll underway to decide on which server the assault on Mordor shall take place. Once the server is determined, all interested parties must create a character there and complete the tutorial (which takes about an hour).
Also note that the different races in Lord of the Rings Online have different starting areas. If you choose a race that does not start in Hobbiton, you should bring your character to the homeland of the Hobbits before the event starts. What level your character is at does not matter at all.
Tip: Until December 7, 2025, you can secure a whole bunch of quest content for free in Lord of the Rings Online with the coupon code EXPLOREOURWORLD that otherwise you would have to pay for or grind for a long time.
How is the community reacting to the event? Many fans are celebrating the project on Reddit, with over 770 upvotes on Reddit and over 100 comments. For many, participation will likely depend on which server the event will take place on.
ByKolaYT, one of the organizers, promises a unique experience: “Hey guys! I hope you can all participate in this monumental march. It is being organized by me and Metamutt. Let your friends and family know so they can join. We want to set a new participant record!”
In the past, similar projects have taken place multiple times. Recently, a YouTuber set off from Bywater with his character and accompanied the journey to Mordor with original texts read by Andy Serkis: YouTuber mimics Frodo and Sam in Lord of the Rings Online, walks from Bywater to Mordor, takes longer than the film trilogy
