In January 2017, Square Enix announced that they would develop an Avengers game in collaboration with Marvel. There were even thoughts of an action MMO. However, things have become very quiet regarding the Avengers Project. What happened?
What is “Avengers Project”? Avengers Project will be the first in a series of games developed in collaboration between Disney and Square Enix.

Other than a short teaser trailer and some press releases, there has been very little information about the game so far. However, we know that it is a “3rd Person Cover Based Action Adventure” and that the project will be “enormously large.”
It is being developed by the subsidiary studio Crystal Dynamics, which many will know from the “Tomb Raider” and “Legacy of Kain” titles.
What is the latest status of the development? Just about a year ago in April 2018, Ron Ronsenberg, the co-head of Crystal Dynamics, stated that the development of the Avengers Project is progressing “extremely fast”.
The company also published various job postings, offering leadership positions in level and single-player campaign design.
The job postings repeatedly emphasized that the game would have strong multiplayer elements and that the designers would be responsible for creating new online experiences.
Since then, however, there has been silence regarding Project Avengers.
Is there still going to be something? There are increasing signs that we will soon see new information about the Avengers Project.
And now this …

Very special guests join our #GoogleGDC19 Developer Day session! Who? @amy_hennig, @CrystalDynamics and @raphkoster. Join us for an awesome panel on March 19 at 3 PM PT in West Hall, Room 2011.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the main event! pic.twitter.com/QnVhIrQ04Z
Google announced in a tweet that there will be a special panel at the Game Developers Conference 2019 on March 19. The guests planned for the panel are:
- Crystal Dynamics
- Writer Amy Hennig
- Game Designer Raph Koster
Why is this interesting? The two guests Hennig and Koster fit well with the job postings that Crystal Dynamics published for the Avengers Project a year ago.
- Amy Hennig is well-suited for the position of Game Writer / Narrative Designer and has worked for a long time at Crystal Dynamics on the “Legacy of Kain” series.
- Raph Koster, on the other hand, has tons of experience in developing MMORPGs, as he worked for a long time on Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies. He also fits the roles described in the job postings.
It is still unclear what role Google will play in this panel. Rumors that the internet giant is supposedly working on their own console have been circulating in the gaming community for years. However, this remains unconfirmed thus far.
We may learn more at GDC 2019.
