Citadel: Forged with Fire aimed to appeal to Harry Potter fans with broom flights and magic. However, the MMO couldn’t quite take off even after its official release. We take a look at the situation.
What is Citadel? The MMO Citadel: Forged with Fire focuses on survival elements and lots of magic. You are a wizard who must survive in a dangerous world and master your magic. You can even build your own fortress and compete in broom flight duels with other wizards.
In addition, exploring the game world is on the agenda, where you descend into dungeons, collect resources, and fight monsters.
- Survival is essential, which is why survival elements play a significant role.
- Collecting resources (or growing these resources) and crafting items are important parts of the game.
- You learn spells that you use tactically in battles.
- If you have a broom, you use it as a flying means of transport like in Harry Potter.
- It is possible to build dwellings and fortresses.
- PvP also plays a role, with duels fought using magic and flying brooms.
- There is no predetermined path to follow. You go your own way in the open world.
A very rocky start
What is the current situation of Citadel? The “Harry Potter MMO” was in Early Access for a long time. This started very promising in the summer of 2017. However, player numbers dropped sharply shortly after. Even the official release on November 1, 2019, couldn’t bring a significant increase in players.
Currently, around 244 players are playing simultaneously according to Steamcharts, with a peak of 440 players in the past 30 days (as of January 17). However, this is only for the PC version. Citadel is also playable on PS4 and Xbox One.
What do players think of the MMO? Players’ opinions on Steam are increasingly becoming positive. The reviews of the game in the last 30 days were at 80% and “Very Positive.”
- Ragdoll writes, “Honestly, it makes me sad that this game had such a rough start. Everyone gave up after its release, but the developers have made this game so entertaining now.”
- DevilN thinks, “It’s a great game! A few too many glitches, but still very fun.”
- Athame explains, “I had a great time with this game. It seems pretty underrated.”
What were the problems with the game? Citadel struggled with too little content even during the Early Access phase. Especially the endgame was lacking. However, the developers worked hard to implement player feedback and continuously introduce improvements. Even a kind of Quidditch was introduced to satisfy Harry Potter fans. You can read our opinion on the Early Access version here:
However, players simply want even more. Daily missions quickly lose their appeal, and even the endgame is quickly exhausted despite improvements. There is still a lack of content.
The developers are picking up speed
What do the developers have planned for 2020? The team behind Citadel has released a roadmap for the year 2020. A series of interesting new features are planned:
- An epic story: The quest system has been expanded, and once it goes live, you can choose a new series of narrative quest lines.
- Dye system: You create colored fabrics and dye every armor and clothing piece and even tamed creatures.
- New creature: A new enemy will appear later this year.
- World Boss Events: Challenging boss monsters will appear in the world that you can fight alone or in groups. If you defeat them, valuable loot awaits you.
- New siege weapons: Explosive potions and more will find their way into the game to make sieges even more exciting.
- New mastery structures: Further mastery level structures will be introduced. These are powerful objects and buildings such as defenses that you can only build once your hero reaches level 60 and transitions into the mastery level.
What is important about these updates? Especially the story content with the quests and the world bosses are something that Citadel desperately needs. Because these are the types of content that players desire.
What does the future hold for Citadel? With the upcoming updates, the MMO seems to be getting exactly what it currently lacks. However, the success of the game also depends on how many players take notice of it. The developers need to do more advertising to get their game talked about. Because according to the reviews, it is a really good MMO, but it is still missing some content, which is on its way.
Success will not only come when the developers turn the right knobs, but especially when as many players as possible check out Citadel: Forged with Fire – not just fans of Harry Potter.
