Many gamers try to cool down with water or another drink. However, you should be extremely careful when you are around your gaming PC or console with it. Because if you knock over the glass and the liquid runs onto your hardware, it can be absolutely deadly for the PC or console.
Water and electronics simply do not mix
Why is liquid a problem? In regular tap water or sparkling water, there are small particles, called ions, that often come from salt. You cannot see them with the naked eye. These ions cause the water to become conductive (via lenntech.de). Pure water does not occur in nature in this form, as ions from salts are often dissolved in water in nature (via wassertechnik.pro).
These particles can also cause a short circuit in your device when your phone goes for a swim or you pour a glass of mineral water over your computer. Distilled water is an exception.
If you spilled not just water but even cola or juice over your hardware, additional problems arise. Because juice and cola contain sugar which can settle on the hardware and damage solder joints or critical circuit paths.
What else can happen? If you have submerged your gaming PC or individual components in water and they still seem to work, you should still be cautious.
Because water can cause annoying follow-up damage. Liquid may have seeped in and caused corrosion on the circuit board. So, rust is formed. Your PC may work again at that moment, but in the worst case, it is only a matter of time until it completely fails.
Also important: If you spill your drink over your phone, console, or gaming PC, the warranty or guarantee will generally be voided. An exception is if you have taken out an additional insurance for your device against water damage, which some sellers offer when purchasing new hardware.
