If you want to buy a graphics card, you will see not only a lot of numbers but also strange abbreviations. One of these abbreviations is “Ti”, which you can find on some models.
But what does “Ti” actually mean and why are not all graphics cards sold with this abbreviation? MeinMMO explains what’s behind it.
You will only find the abbreviation “Ti” with the manufacturer Nvidia
Where can you find the abbreviation “Ti”? Ti is a designation that you will only find with the graphics processors of the Nvidia brand. You won’t find the abbreviation on AMD graphics cards. The “Ti” has now become established at Nvidia, and it is seen not only on the powerful RTX graphics cards but also on the smaller GTX models.
What does Ti mean? The abbreviation “Ti” stands for “Titanium.” If a graphics card has “Ti,” it usually means that it is an improved or more powerful model than the non-Ti model.
While you won’t come across the abbreviation “Ti” with AMD, AMD also uses an abbreviation: Powerful graphics cards are designated with an “XT.”
What does “Ti” mean in practice? We can illustrate this by comparing the RTX 3070 Ti with the RTX 3070:
- The Ti version offers more tensor cores and delivers a faster memory bandwidth than the regular RTX 3070.
- The RTX 3070 Ti has a TDP of 290 watts, while the TDP of the RTX 3070 is only 220 watts.
- The video memory is identical in both graphics cards. However, the RTX 3070 Ti delivers about 7 percent more performance in games than the RTX 3070.
Is the Ti model worth it? “Ti” does not always represent a significant upgrade. The Ti and non-Ti models can be very close together, and the Ti model might only be better in details. Therefore, it is not always advisable to go for the Ti model right away.
For example, the RTX 3070 Ti offers only 5 percent more average FPS at WQHD resolution than the GeForce RTX 3070. In Full HD, the differences between WQHD and Full HD are hardly noticeable, as the graphics cards perform very closely. At 4K, the gap between the RTX 3070 Ti and the RTX 3070 grows to about 9 percent.
