The sale of accounts and characters is strictly prohibited in most MMORPGs. However, some MMOs allow it. What is your opinion on this?
MMORPGs are among the games that can be played virtually endlessly, which is why fans of the genre often invest thousands of play hours into their favorite game. They undertake quests, defeat raid bosses, master dungeons, and especially continuously develop their characters.
Although one often regards their character as property into which they have invested much time and money, selling characters is prohibited in most MMORPGs. The few exceptions are MMOs like Tibia or EVE Online, where it is possible to transfer characters for in-game currency between accounts.
However, the prohibitions do not prevent people from selling their characters anyway. You can find plenty of game characters for sale on RMT sites (Real Money Trading) and with some gold sellers. Accordingly, the MMORPG community regularly engages in discussions about whether the sale should be legalized or not.
- Proponents of sales argue that the characters belong to them and that investing time and money creates a new value that the developer does not provide.
- Opponents of sales point to security issues associated with free account trading (example: a scammer steals an account and sells it to themselves to fake legitimacy). Additionally, the sale of characters is considered Pay2Win.
