Retail, Bulk, and OEM Compared in Graphics Cards
What does Retail mean? Retail is the “normal” state, how you can usually buy a graphics card in a store: The graphics card comes in an attractively colored original box, and it usually includes a manual, a driver CD, and sometimes additional accessories.
What does Bulk mean? A graphics card that you buy as “Bulk” is usually sold without original packaging and accessories. The graphics card is typically only in an anti-static bag and in a neutral cardboard box.
Similar to processors, where certain products are excluded from a warranty, bulk models for graphics cards can also be excluded from a warranty. However, a guarantee always exists.
What does OEM mean? The abbreviation OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. Products with the label “OEM” are usually sold to wholesalers or companies that integrate components like graphics cards into their own products. A company that sells gaming PCs often uses OEM models.
OEM models may have different warranties than retail models. Rarely, OEM models can deliver different performance or use different BIOS than official cards that you can buy in stores. OEM cards sold on eBay are often taken out of complete systems. AMD’s RX 7900 GRE, for example, was initially available only as an OEM model before it was officially available in retail.
