The new game from BioWare, Anthem, is often compared to Destiny and Destiny 2. But what does one say about this comparison? The Game Director highlights three differences: verticality, freedom, and storytelling.
Who is speaking? It is Jonathan Warner, the Game Director of Anthem, speaking with the US magazine Entertainment.
This is what Warner says about the comparison with Destiny and whether it bothers him:
The comparison does not annoy me. I think people like to look for patterns, and this type of game is relatively new, so people will make these comparisons. They are trying to understand what Anthem is and what it is not.
According to Warner, people who play Anthem will quickly realize that the comparison of Anthem to Destiny is not accurate. Throughout the response, Warner highlights three differences.
Anthem’s Differences: Flying and Freedom
This is how Anthem differs from Destiny:
I think the comparison falls apart quickly. We have so much verticality in the game.
We give players the freedom to do what they want and do not lock them into a class. We allow players to choose the Javelin they want at any time. That feels special.
According to Warner, there is a moment when players clearly see the differences from Destiny:
When you have your hands on the controller and jump into the air and start flying freely through the environment for the first time – that is the moment when most players understand it.
Another strength Warner sees in BioWare’s history as a strong “RPG studio”:
Beyond that, we bring our storytelling. What we call “Our World, My Story”. This way we allow players to interact with the story in a way that makes them comfortable. We create a narrative space and still share a large, open world.
I think those are the differences.
Those who cannot participate in the currently ongoing alpha for Anthem will be able to see the differences between Anthem and Destiny 2 themselves in the demo of the online shooter later.
