Currently, there are hundreds of MMOs, MMORPGs, and other online games that you can play. However, many are said to be dead and not worth playing. But when is an MMO actually considered dead?
With the spread of the internet, MMOs and online games became popular. There are still old titles from the 90s that you can play today, including 8 ancient MMORPGs.
Almost as old as these games is the discussion about when a game is considered “dead.” For instance, World of Warcraft has been called dead dozens of times, yet it still remains the strongest MMORPG ever.
Other games that have a much smaller number of players than World of Warcraft are considered very much alive, without much discussion about it. There are even games that have received little to no updates for years, yet their loyal players cling to them, such as with Guild Wars 1, Allods Online, or RIFT.
Officially, these games are still running. Are they therefore still considered alive or already dead? Does death begin only with the shutdown of the game, or when the community decides it?
