RPGs and their worlds that we dove into too late
Author Nicole became aware of a role-playing game thanks to a colleague and wishes she had actively followed the previous parts. And that is:
Diablo. I only started with part 4 (thanks, Benedict) and would have loved to play all the other parts in hindsight. I never had them on my radar and thought it wasn’t for me.
Speaking of Benedict – there’s also a role-playing game he would have liked to follow earlier before he had to discover the other works of the studio:
Divinity: Original Sin. I only played part 2 and found it fantastic, then postponed part 1 and even played Baldur’s Gate 3 first… But the first one tells SO much important story that I would have liked to know earlier. Didn’t play it earlier because… a lot of time investment and it’s just an “old” game.
Editor Caro also regrets having given up on a game so early before she could really enjoy it years later:
For me, it is Elden Ring, of all things a game I now consider one of my absolute favorites. I bought it right on release because I loved the art style, but unfortunately, I had no experience with other FromSoftware titles or Soulslikes in general. And that became very clear right away.
I was so bad and completely overwhelmed by the gameplay that I gave up at the sight of the first giant. Just for a group of soldiers from Godrik, I needed 2 hours, and everything else just scared me too much.
Years later, during which I still couldn’t find peace with Elden Ring, some friends gave me the necessary push I needed for a second attempt. And this time I knew what awaited me. With a few tips, I found my own rhythm and finally the fun and great experience I had expected from such a beautiful game.
It’s a pity that I didn’t play at the launch where the community uncovered the hinterlands piece by piece together. However, I am more than glad to have given the game a second chance. Otherwise, I would have missed a true masterpiece.
On the next page, we talk about unfortunate circumstances that prevented our colleagues from playing certain games on time or even never.
