We asked you why you are currently not playing pure MMORPGs anymore and you told us that you have found a replacement in the meantime.
What was the survey about? We wanted to know from you, what your current stance on the MMORPG genre is. You told us what you like about MMORPGs and which aspects you find annoying.
However, there were also many users who said that they have since distanced themselves from the genre and found a suitable replacement.
These were your answers: Of the 2033 users who participated in the survey, 20.91% said that they are no longer pure MMORPG players because they have found a replacement in other multiplayer games in the meantime.
Instead, they play other games with strong multiplayer components or games-as-a-service titles, such as The Division 2, Destiny 2, Monster Hunter: World, or other MMO titles that are currently on the market.
A development that we have also observed in recent years on Mein-MMO.de. Many of our readers not only comment on news about MMORPGs but also actively play Destiny 2 or initially Anthem. Our data paths in our analysis tools also show this.
Why are players switching to other genres? Our survey revealed, among other things, three frequently mentioned reasons that annoy you about many MMORPGs. These include:
- Too many free2play MMORPGs that design their content around the cash shop (997 votes)
- Little innovation, all MMORPGs follow the same patterns and have similar gameplay (819 votes)
- There are currently only a few major releases (529 votes)
Many multiplayer enthusiasts therefore have to look for alternatives. Games-as-a-service with MMO elements often fulfill the need for innovation and new releases. Although other genres may not fully replace true MMORPGs for many of you, around 20% still feel at home there.

Time is also an important factor for you. The lifestyle of gamers has changed in recent years. Many entertainment options compete for players’ time. MMORPG developers like Naoki Yoshida from FFXIV are also aware of this.
Our user Joey writes, for example:
[…] I now prefer games that are not focused on Massive Multiplayer but rather on “small scale” multiplayer. Most of my friends have drastically reduced their online time, so games that can be fully enjoyed both alone and in small groups are more fun.
Many free2play MMORPGs exploit time as a resource to profit from it by offering skip-options for money. This is a practice that you strongly criticized in our survey. Dennis G. writes on Facebook:
MMORPGs require a lot of time. Time is very valuable nowadays. […] Fast-paced games like Fortnite, Apex, PUBG, FIFA, etc. are the future.

Have people completely given up on MMORPGs? Our survey showed that many of you are still loyal to the genre. Of the 2033 surveyed users, 529 said they are convinced that we will still receive good MMORPGs in the future.
You love MMORPGs mainly because:
- They offer you large, steadily growing fantasy worlds to explore (981 votes)
- Due to the PvE aspect and cooperation with other players (703 votes)
- And because they offer different classes with diverse builds (690 votes)
Is your situation similar? Have you found other multiplayer games that you play until the next big MMORPG comes out that you enjoy? Are you loyal to the genre or do you play basically everything?
