The Nintendo Switch 2 receives significant upgrades compared to its predecessor. However, this does not apply to the game cartridges, as they taste just as bad as before.
Why do the games taste bad? In an interview with GameSpot, Senior Director Takuhiro Dohta explained that the cartridges containing Nintendo Switch games are coated with a substance that tastes extremely nasty. This has been the case with predecessor cartridges as well.
They are coated with denatonium benzoate – a substance that farmers use to deter animals from eating their crops. While it is not harmful to put it in your mouth, it will cause you to spit it out as quickly as possible. The cartridges receive this coating so that children and animals do not accidentally eat them.
Although they haven’t tested the new cartridges themselves, they have licked the cartridges of the first Nintendo Switch, and they passed their test. This is also confirmed by Nintendo’s Group Manager, Kouichi Kawamoto: “When the Nintendo Switch was developed, I licked it (the cartridges) once, but never again. I can’t believe other people would try that.”

These statements have led to general amusement in the community via Reddit. However, many also suspect that it will quickly become widespread and turn into a kind of challenge. Most take it humorously:

Some were looking forward to a sharper taste given the new red color of the cartridges – somewhere in the direction of cayenne pepper. Others also refer to the increased new price of the games, suggesting they should definitely taste more expensive than those from the first generation.
