The MMORPG genre is currently in a difficult situation. Many of the new releases in recent years have turned out to be disappointments. Yet the genre still has many fans. What do you think about the current state of MMORPGs?
What is the current situation of MMORPGs? Developing a good MMORPG is not an easy task in our time. The high development costs have brought some good MMORPGs to their knees, especially considering the large flood of various free-to-play games on PC and mobile devices.
Most MMORPGs therefore rely on premium memberships and cash shops for their funding models. The only MMORPGs that still have a real subscription model are World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV.
For 2019, only three new MMORPGs were announced, of which there have been no major updates for a long time. Only with Astellia, which successfully completed the first closed beta test this week, are there significant advancements.
There is still no trace of the Western release of Lost Ark, which is currently considered one of the best Asian MMORPGs.
What is the reputation of modern MMORPGs? Currently, there is no great shortage of MMORPGs. Especially in Asia, for example in Korea, new MMORPGs are regularly announced and then come to us in the West.
However, players no longer trust these MMORPGs. They often give the impression that they are designed to make quick money with microtransactions and cash shops. The quality and quantity of the content often leaves much to be desired.
Especially after the collapse of Bless, many players became very suspicious of announcements of new MMORPGs. Bless was a promising game with a high budget that many players were looking forward to and were greatly disappointed.
Nevertheless, many players still hold on to the genre and participate in beta tests of new MMORPGs. They have their main MMORPG that they can’t let go of or hope for the next big thing that will shake up the market again.
