In a rather conservative approach, we reported in December 2024 that Blizzard likely made over 4 million euros with the 78 euro mount “Gold-Trimmed Trader Brutosaurus” from WoW. A new analysis shows that this was still far from the actual amount.
How did we first arrive at 4+ million euros? The sum was based on the statistics from the website dataforazeroth.com, which includes more than 1.1 million WoW accounts and from which it could be inferred that 5.3552 percent of all accesses own the mount “Gold-Trimmed Trader Brutosaurus,” meaning almost 62,000 accounts.
Considering the price of 78 euros that the developers set for the limited-time mount, this would result in revenues of 4.829 million euros. The fact that the actual amount is likely to be higher comes solely from the fact that Data of Azeroth does not have all WoW accounts in its system. However, how much higher was unclear. But now there are new figures.
20 years of WoW – this was not only a reason to celebrate but also for reflections:
Mount microtransactions? It’s worth it!
What are these numbers? Although the new analysis from wowhead.com also relies on the statistics from Data of Azeroth, it includes recorded numbers from raider.io as well. In this way, over 1.5 million WoW accounts were found, from which 12.141 percent are said to own the exclusive Trader Brutosaurus.
At a price of 78 euros per mount, this results in revenues for Blizzard of about 14.7 million euros. This may sound relatively small in Microsoft’s total revenue, but we are only talking about a single, simple mount skin. By the way, this skin has already been reused multiple times by Blizzard.
And this result also applies: The actual revenue is likely to be even higher, as the entire region of China had to be excluded from the analysis due to the lack of available figures.
What do I need to know about the mount? When the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft started in October 2024, the developers gave themselves a gift: a mount that costs almost 80 euros, which is only to be sold for a limited time. On the launch day, it was already clear: This luxury mount is a mega-success for Blizzard.
Among the special features of the gold-trimmed Trader Brutosaurus are two NPCs that offer unique services. While one grants mobile access to the auction house, the second helper serves as a useful mailman – and all of this anywhere you can summon mounts. For comparable alternatives, some WoW players have dug very deep into their gold pockets.
