The cooperative shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 was a success for developer Saber Interactive in September 2024. Since then, the game has received several updates that brought new content, some of which caused discontent in the community. Now the developers have apologized.
Why are the developers apologizing? In the past, Space Marine 2 held community events that promised cosmetic content as a reward for completing a challenge.
In December 2024, the Decimation Event was launched, requiring 10 victories in the operations. Anyone who achieved the required 10 victories by January 20, 2025, received an “exclusive skin” for the chainsword as a reward (via focus-entmt.com). The announcement at the time stated: “You don’t want to miss this one, Space Marine, so get ready and head back to the battlefield!”
The community criticized the possibility of missing out on a skin if players do not participate in a time-limited event. This fosters the fear of missing out (short: FOMO).
Space Marine 2 does not want to be a complete service game
What do the developers say? Saber Interactive stated that in the future, all content that was made available through events would be made available to every player (via focus-entmt.com).
The community events are said by the developers to be a way to obtain this content earlier and not to cause stress or frustration. The developers promised: “We do not intend to turn Space Marine 2 into a full-fledged live service game.”
The developers further stated that they need to ensure a smoother unlocking of the items and apologized to the players: “We deeply apologize for the annoyance and are currently working on a simplified process for unlocking items to make the experience less restrictive.”
New information on upcoming content: In addition to apologizing to the community, the developers also announced a few new details about the upcoming update and the content it will include.
With update 7.0, the cooperative shooter is set to receive a new weapon for PvE and a new operation, as well as the ability to create private PvP lobbies.
