Fortnite started in 2019 with a new chapter after being swallowed by a black hole. But now Epic is doing things completely differently than before. We show you what is fundamentally different about Fortnite Chapter 2 compared to the final phase of Fortnite 1.
What happened? After the end of Season 10 in Fortnite, the map of the battle royale shooter was swallowed by a black hole. For several days, players stared at the hole: the servers were unreachable.
Then a new chapter in Fortnite began: Chapter 2 Season 1. This also introduced some changes, such as:
- New Map
- Fishing
- New Level System
- Swimming and Motorboats
But it is now completely different in the new chapter than before.
The 3 Fundamental Changes in Fortnite
What is different than before? Though some cool new features came with the launch of the new chapter, there are still many differences from previous seasons.
Communication with the Community
What has changed in communication? Epic Games has always had strong communication with the Fortnite community. Updates were announced on time, server issues were addressed, and detailed patch notes for updates were published.
The biggest change now is the patch notes, as they are either not released at all or only briefly published.
At the start of the new chapter, the lack of patch notes was quite understandable. Players were supposed to explore the new map and see what is new. But by now, it is a bit strange:
- Previously, Epic provided players with all information about Fortnite: Even minimal changes in drop rates or damage were indicated down to the decimal point.
- Today, there are not even patch notes when new weapons are introduced. Players are supposed to experience that themselves.
Little Change and Content
Anyone who knows Fortnite from previous seasons knows how many changes and new content there were. Almost weekly, a new weapon or item was added.
In Season 10, the mech was an item that many did not like. It was a means of transport and weapon in one.
This season, there have been few changes so far, and there was hardly any new content: just a new weapon (the harpoon), and a gimmick like the lightsabers now.
This is very unusual, as it has been so quiet in Fortnite for the last time during the early seasons.
Simplified Basic Fortnite
It seems that with Chapter 2, we have returned to the original basic Fortnite, as:
- There is a much smaller selection of weapons, as 28 weapons and items were removed. This makes the weapon logic much simpler since there is no longer a large selection. Also, “earlier” weapons have now been consolidated, and only the “epic and legendary versions” of the basic weapon remain.
- there is only one means of transport: the motorboat. Previously, there were several ways to move around. There were rifts, vehicles, and jump pads. These caused chaos in the game and made Fortnite harder to understand for beginners.
In the original Fortnite from 2017, there was a small selection of weapons, and it was primarily about shooting and building.
But with all the new items that were added in 2018 and 2019, players quickly learned to come up with new combat methods. Now players have to switch back to basic Fortnite.

What do the pros say about this simplified Fortnite? Professional players like Mongraal and Ninja agree: The game needs new content again!
Mongraal tweeted that Fortnite has stagnated. He wishes for items like jump pads, impulse grenades, and chug jugs to return.
Twitch streamer Mongraal agreed with Ninja and said:
“Yes, I think for the most part, they want to keep the feel of simplicity like in Season 1. But I hope they will introduce more new things soon.”

The two pros seem to agree: Fortnite wants to emulate Season 1 from 2017 with Chapter 2 and keep the game simple.
But they both wish that there will soon be new items and weapons.
Professional player Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, who has often stood up for Fortnite, replied to Mongraal’s post:
“Slow and steady. The game was so crazy at the end of Season X. I think Epic is trying to emulate how they introduced items in Chapter 1. But I absolutely agree with you, I want more variety.”
