In World of Warcraft, a Warlock goes on a rampage and takes down 15 enemy players with just one spell. Are Warlocks really that OP?
The fact that Warlocks in World of Warcraft can be quite nasty is clear from the name of the class and a look at their demons. However, the fact that these Fel casters also have the ability to eliminate over a dozen players at once is a bit much. A single Chaos Bolt is enough to take out 15 enemy players in PvP simultaneously.
What happened? Rextroy has released yet another video showcasing him executing an absurdly powerful combo in World of Warcraft. As a Warlock, he manages to hit up to 15 enemy players with a single Chaos Bolt, dealing between 40,000 and 50,000 damage to each. Most non-tank characters are taken out by such damage immediately, leading to a quick visit to the spirit healer.
How does it work? As usual, Rextroy combines a whole range of talents and abilities to achieve incredibly high damage numbers. The key elements are:
- Dark Soul: A buff from the raid “Sanctum of Domination”. This buff increases damage done by Shadow spells by 60% at 3 stacks, which also applies to Chaos Bolt.
- Cursed Obliteration: A PvP talent that ensures single-target spells hit all enemies within the curse area. Thus, Chaos Bolt hits many players simultaneously.
- Rotting Soul Container: This legendary item grants up to 20% critical strike rating and 20% additional haste – further increasing the damage of Chaos Bolt as critical strike rating directly translates into spell damage (since it always critically strikes).
- Soulbind: Korayn from the Night Fae provides the bonuses “First Strike” and “Tactics of the Wild Hunt”, which temporarily increase damage by an additional 10% and provide an extra 25% critical strike chance.
All of this results in massive damage numbers between 40,000 and 50,000 damage, often leading to an extremely quick death.
Is this allowed? Basically, Rextroy is only using mechanics with his Warlock that exist in the game and are enabled. However, it might be a mistake that he can take the “60%” buff from the raid Sanctum of Domination outside.
Usually, Rextroy reports his discoveries directly to Blizzard, giving the developers a few days to fix the issue. Only after that does Rextroy release his videos. This way, he has an interesting video with cool finds, but there is no risk of thousands of players replicating this trick, as it would have already been fixed by the time of the video release.
Nonetheless, it is always exciting to see what gaps in the game mechanics players find and what absurd effects can be achieved with them.
A few days ago, Rextroy cleaned up with his Warlock – with a different spell.
